Alberto Cortez, 6o, beloved husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend, entered into the glory of his eternal life on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at his residence surrounded by his loving family after a brief but valiant battle against cancer.
Betin as he was known to all, was a native and lifetime resident of Brownsville. He was born on January 15, 1950 to Emiliano and Catalina Cortez. He served his country during the Vietnam Conflict as a SeaBee in the United States Navy and after active duty served 5 years in the Naval Reserve. He was a dedicated and loyal employee with the PUB serving as a buyer in the Purchasing Dept.
Betin was a quiet simple man who loved music and playing the guitar, a passion he passed on to his two sons. The Beatles and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were among his favorite musical groups. He enjoyed watching football and baseball, and also enjoyed running, cycling, and swimming.
Betin will be dearly missed by all those fortunate to have known him.
Betin was preceded in death by his father, Emiliano Cortez and by his maternal grandmother, Maura Lopez.
Left to eternally treasure his memory are his loving wife of 36 years, Yolanda Manzano Cortez his daughter, Vanessa Jesus Escamilla, of Brownsville 2 sons: David Cortez of Edinburg and Adrian Cortez of College Station, TX his mother, Catalina Lopez Cortez, of Brownsville 4 brothers: Alfredo Carolina Cortez of Brownsville, Armando Margarita Cortez, of Houston, Arturo Cortez and Arnoldo Cortez both from Brownsville 1 sister, Imelda Cortez of Cedar Hill, TX the 3 grandsons who were the apple of his eye, Noah Langs Cortez, Sebastian Escamilla, and Anthony Rey Escamilla, numerous nieces and nephews, extended family members, and many friends.
Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, October 13th in the East Chapel at DarlingMouser Funeral Home. We will resume visitation at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, October 13th at St. Lukes Catholic Church, 2800 Rockwell Dr. with the recitation of the holy rosary at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume on Thursday, October 14th at 10 at DarlingMouser. The Mass of Christian Resurrection will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 14th at St. Lukes.
Interment will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park. Betins brothers: Alfredo and Arturo Cortez his brothersinlaw, Dr. Jose and Sergio Manzano and 2 cousins, Daniel and Javier Lopez are honored to be serving as his pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be his 2 sons David and Adrian Cortez and his soninlaw, Jesus Escamilla.
Military honors will be conducted at the graveside by The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2035 under the direction of Luis Lucio.
