BROWNSVILLE, TX. – Alberto S. Olvera, a loving father, grandfather, husband and brother, passed away peacefully on Sunday, the 17th of November 2024 in the comfort of his Brownsville home, surrounded by his beloved wife and family. He was 83 years of age. 

Olvera was born July 27, 1941 in Brownsville, Texas. He was a graduate of Brownsville High School. He served as a military policeman in the United States Army from 1963 to 1966 when he was honorably discharged. Olvera’s love of conjunto music would lead him to meet the love of his life, Gloria Leal. The two married in 1966, and remained married for 58 years.

Olvera’s heart was filled with compassion, kindness and love for his family. He had pride in his culture and believed in the power of hard work, a good education and the ambition to succeed. He spent more than 30 years at the Levi Strauss & Co. plant in Brownsville until his retirement in 2002.

Olvera was a teller of stories, a giver of wisdom and loved history, politics and sports. He was moral compass to many. He will forever remain a hero to his children, family and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Francisco and Ignacia S. Olvera; brothers, Alvino Olvera and Refugio Olvera; and by his sister, Raquel Olvera.

He leaves a lifetime of stories, cherished memories and wisdom to his wife, Gloria L. Olvera; his children Alicia Olvera, Alberto Olvera, Jr. (Rosa), and Crystal Olvera; his grandchildren, James Olvera and Victoria Olvera; his siblings Benita Torres (Santiago), Arnulfo Olvera (Nicolasa), Nazaria Cortinas (Manuel) of Pasadena, Texas, Estella Sanchez (Pedro) of Harlingen, Texas, Celia Vera (Juan), Francisco Olvera, Jr. (Maria Elena), and Anita Puente (Jesus) of La Feria, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, the 21st of November 2024 between the hours of twelve noon and nine o'clock at night, with the recitation of the holy rosary to begin at seven o'clock Thursday evening within the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home. 

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at twelve noon on Friday, the 22nd of November 2024 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1200 Lincoln Street, Brownsville. Interment with military honors will then follow, via an escorted procession, at Buena Vista Burial Park, 5 McDavitt Boulevard, Brownsville.

Honored to serve as his pallbearers will be Albert Olvera, Jr., James Olvera, Juan Leal, Juan Vera, Jesus Ruiz, and Santiago Torres.

Honorary pallbearers are Arnulfo Olvera, Francisco Olvera, Jr., Tony Leal, Luis Leal, and Javier Leal
