BROWNSVILLE, TX. - Alfonso Peña, Jr., affectionately known as Big Al, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, the 23rd of May 2024 at Solara Hospital in Brownsville, surrounded by his family. He was seventy years of age.
Alfonso was born on June 1, 1953 in Brownsville, Texas, son of the late Alfonso Peña, Sr. and Eloisa Vilano Peña. A proud veteran, Alfonso served nineteen years in the United States Navy, enlisting in 1972 and honorably discharged in 1991 as Chief Petty Officer. He wed his beloved Loretta on April 23, 1983 and together, celebrated their forty-one year anniversary last month. Alfonso worked in Child Support Services and went on to work with the Veterans Administration until his retirement as a supervisor. An avid biker, Alfonso enjoyed riding his Harley and was always on the go. He also served as a coordinator for Bike Fest for over twenty years.
Preceding Alfonso in death were his parents, Alfonso Peña, Sr. and Eloisa V. Peña; his brother, Alberto Peña (Patricia); and his nephew, Diego Garcia III.
Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of forty-one years, Loretta R. Peña; his children, Nicole Peña and Alfonso Peña III; his step-children, Anthony Engen and Viola Engen; and his sister, Eulalia Peña Garcia.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, the 29th of May 2024 between the hours of four o'clock in the afternoon and nine o'clock at night, with the recitation of the holy rosary to begin at seven o'clock Wednesday evening within the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home.
Inurnment with military honors will be held at ten o’clock in the morning on Thursday, the 30th of May 2024 at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery, 2520 Inspiration Road, Mission, Texas 78572.
In lieu of floral arrangements and customary remembrances, contributions in memory of Alfonso may be sent to the historic Immaculate Conception Cathedral, 1218 E. Jefferson Street, Brownsville, Texas 78520.
