BROWNSVILLE, TX. - Alfredo Gavito, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and uncle, entered into the glory of his eternal life on Sunday, the 12th of November 2023, in Brownsville, Texas at the age of ninety-nine, surrounded by his loving daughters. He was a descendant and member of two of Brownsville's pioneering families having been born here on August 23, 1924, son of the late Manuel Gavito and Isabel Orive Gavito, the ninth of their ten children.
Alfredo, affectionately known as Grandpa, attended St. Joseph's Academy and Brownsville High School and went on to become a successful businessman. Alongside his brother Ernesto, he owned and operated Gavito Food Store. He then opened Hector’s Pharmacy with his good buddy Hector Garcia. In 1960, he established International Loan Service which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1990. Alfredo was a director of Pan American Bank, until, along with his friends, all sons of pioneer Brownsville families, founded, organized, and was a director of Brownsville National Bank.
On the 22nd of July 1965, Alfredo married the love of his life, Blanca Rosa Lozano, at La Catedral de Nuestra Señora del Refugio in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico.
His family and faith were very important to him. A devout Catholic, Alfredo was an active parishioner of St. Luke Catholic Church. He never missed Sunday Mass and no matter where he was, Alfredo ensured that his family would attend church religiously. Alfredo also dedicated his Sundays to visiting his family. The love he had for his family was beyond measure.
Alfredo also enjoyed engaging in various community activities. He was an avid poker player and loved spending time in Las Vegas.
Preceding Alfredo in death were his parents, Manuel Gavito and Isabel Orive Gavito, and his brothers and sisters Maria Isabel Gavito Maguregui, Antonia Gavito Castillo, Manuel Gavito, Eduardo Gavito, Jose Angel Gavito, Maria del Carmen Gavito Landin, Felipa Gavito Cardenas, Ernesto Gavito, and Roberto Gavito.
Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of fifty-eight years, Blanca Rosa Lozano de Gavito, and their children Maria de Lourdes Gavito, Blanca Isabel Gavito Martinez (Ruben Alberto), and Carmen Alicia Gavito. He is also survived by his greatest prides and joys, his grandchildren Aleksander David Galonsky, Galit Isabella Galonsky, Ruben Alfredo Martinez, Mauricio Esteban Martinez, and Adrian Marcelo Martinez; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
