Amanda "Dora" Dora Merrill

Amanda Dora Merrill passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2008, at the age of 92. She was born on October 5, 1915, in Brownsville, Texas, the daughter of John and Eudosia Merrill, an early pioneer family of Brownsville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Dr. Samuel J. Merrill; and her sisters: Marjorie Park and Annie Merrill.

Despite her tiny 46 stature, she was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1938 from Texas A I University and a Master of Arts degree from Texas A I University in 1953. She was awarded Lifetime Certificates in Professional Elementary, Professional Principal, Professional Counselor, Professional Superintendent, Professional Administrator, Professional Supervisor, and Professional languageLearning Disabilities.

She dedicated her entire teaching career to elementary education in the Rio Grande Valley and mainly to the Brownsville Independent School District. Whether she was a teacher, counselor, or an administrator, a beautiful relationship of love and respect exited between the school children and Miss Merrill. She served as a role model for the many children she mentored in the community, inspiring them to be the best students they could be.

Her 45 year career began in 1938 and ended with her retirement in 1984. Her old students would stop her in stores or on the street and would always ask, Miss Merrill, do you remember me Amazingly, she remembered all of them and could tell them when and where they were in her class.

She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Kappa Kappa Iota.

After Miss Merrills retirement she began a hobby of raising and selling various types of birds which brought her great joy. Recent events caused her to scale down to just a dozen parakeets and cockatiels.

She is survived by her sister, Rosemary Farley, of Tyler; nieces and nephews, which she lovingly helped rear: Don Eddie Moore Christine, Samuel A. Merrill Sandra, Ronnie Park Murna, Candy DeLeon Jose, Randy Park Sandra, all of Brownsville, Marjorie Faye Moon, of Arp, Ruth Ann Moon Tom, of San Antonio, Phyllis Merrill Vallacher Robin, of Boca Raton, FL, and Pam Leal Carlos of Dripping Springs; numerous grand nieces and nephews and all the many students she taught throughout the years.

An anonymous writer once wrote: A good teacher is like a candle. It consumes itself to light the way for others.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, May 19, 2008 in the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home.
