It is with great sadness that the family of Aurelia Mata announces her passing on Sunday July 1, 2018.
Grandma Mata, as she was affectionately known, was born in Weslaco, Texas and resided most of her life in Brownsville, Texas. She passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family. She was married to Tito Mata Sr. for 58 years until his passing in 2013. She graduated from Weslaco High School where she played softball and powderpuff football.
Grandma Mata worked at St. Mary's Catholic School in Brownsville, Texas for 27 years as a physical education instructor, librarian and office assistant.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Church as well as the Saint Joseph Academy Booster Club. Grandma Mata will be lovingly remembered by family, the community, and legions of St. Mary's students.
She leaves behind two sons: Tito Mata Jr. (Zelma Mata), Mario L. Mata (Ann Mata), and two daughters: Theresa Mata-Pistokache (Duke Pistokache), Rebecca Zamora (Javier Zamora). She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren: Vanessa Mata, Alexis Mata, Javier Zamora Jr. (Jasmine Zamora), Joaquin O. Pistokache, Marisa Zamora, Jesse I. Pistokache, Maya Zamora, Malaya Pistokache, Anthony Mata, Aliya Mata, and one great grandchild: Javier Zamora III.
A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, July 6, 2018 at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home in Brownsville, Texas. Please join the family for Visitation from 5:00-7:00p.m., the Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00p.m., and Fellowship thereafter.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Aurelia's name may be made to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 555 W. St. Francis St., Brownsville, Texas 78520.
