B. D. "Bob" Cummins

RANCHO VIEJO, TX. – B. D. "Bob" Cummins died on Sunday, the 23rd of October in Harlingen, Texas, the area where he and his late wife Gladys M. Cummins had retired in 1988.

He was born in English, Indiana in 1926, and ultimately lived to celebrate his 96th birthday. Bob was a proud graduate of Indiana University. He followed his alma mater's athletic teams avidly for the rest of his life.

He pursued a lifelong career in accounting.  Except for a brief stint in public accounting with Ernst & Ernst in Indianapolis, he worked as a financial executive in private industry. His last two positions were with Huffman Manufacturing, the maker of Huffy bicycles, in Dayton, Ohio, and then with Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation and its parent company BATUS in Louisville, Kentucky. He enjoyed success with both companies, and retired from B&W in 1988 as the Senior Vice President of Finance.

Bob and Gladys moved to the Rio Grande Valley in retirement, and thoroughly enjoyed their lives there. Bob was Mayor of their town, Rancho Viejo, Texas, from 1995-2001 after serving as a Town Alderman. He was a fiscal hawk, and left the town finances in excellent shape when his term of office ended.

Bob was devoted to his family throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Gladys and by his parents. He is survived by his two sons Dean, a physician, and John, a lawyer, their spouses and their families, including his four grandchildren and his three great-grandchildren.

Bob was an avid tennis and bridge player for many years, and closely followed many college and professional sports. He was a member of the Louisville Boat Club and the Rancho Viejo Country Club at various times. He was also a member of the Financial Executives Institute, and the Rotary Clubs of Louisville and Brownsville.

In his last years, Bob was given tremendous care and assistance by a host of people, for which the family is extremely grateful.

In lieu of floral arrangements, the family requests donations in his memory be made to Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana and to the World Radio Network 88.3 FM in Brownsville, Texas.
