After a brief illness, Mrs. Bertha G. Leal, age 84, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 17, 2012. She was a devout Catholic and was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. Bertha dedicated her life to her family and was the constant companion of her late husband Challo. Together they enjoyed dining out and going fishing. After his death, she dedicated her time to her grandchildren, especially Martin Jr. and Larazo with whom she loved to travel all over Texas and watch wrestling with. Her main pleasure was defending her boys when they got into trouble with their dad.
Bertha was born on October 24, 1927, to Benito Garza and Josefina Rubio, and was a lifelong resident of Brownsville.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Cesario Challo Leal Jr., her son, Marine PFC Valentin Leal Sr., and her daughter, Josie Leal Salinas.
She is survived by her only brother, Eustorgio Elvira Moreno of New Braunfels her sons: Guadalupe E. Obdelia Leal, Cesario Challo Carmen Leal III, Martin Angelita Leal Sr., and a daughterinlaw, Alice B. Valentin Leal her grandchildren: Valentin Denise Leal Jr., David Michele Leal, Lorraine Eddie Garcia, Laura Anastasio Armijo, Larry Kristen Leal, Mary Ellen Raymond Radney, Lisa Y. Leal, Martin Leal Jr., and Lazaro Angel Leal her great grandchildren: Skylar Rippard, Jayden Radney, Haley Marie Leal, Sydney Leal, Tyler V. Leal, Joshua Leal, Adrian Leal, Michael Garcia, Ryan Armijo, Lucas Armijo, and Addison Leal and a greatgreat granddaughter, Emily Leal.
Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. and continue through 9 p.m. on Monday, June 18, 2012, in the East Chapel at DarlingMouser Funeral Home with the recitation of the holy rosary at 7 p.m. Monday evening. The Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 2055 Southmost Road. Interment will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park.
Martin Leal Jr., Lazaro A. Leal, Valentin Leal Jr., Larry Leal, Adrian Leal, and Anastasio Armijo are honored to be serving as Berthas pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Denny Church, Eddie Garcia, David Leal, Henry Lubbeck, and Alfonso Barrientes.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Robles and Dr. Pelly as well as to Ebony Lake Nursing Home for the excellent care they gave to her, and to the people at Odyssey Hospice Care for helping to make her wish of being at home a reality and for providing loving and personalized care to her and the family during her final days. The family is eternally grateful to Lala Cortez who was her caregiver in her final year.
