Nena Torres, as she was lovingly called during her entire lifetime, passed away quietly after visiting with her immediate family at Valley Baptist Hospital in Brownsville on Wednesday, January 11, 2012.
Nena spent her early childhood in Brownsville and then in Mexico City, where she attended Catholic schools, Isabel La Catlica and Jeanne de Chard. She completed her education in Monterrey, Mexico, where she lived during her adolescence. Nena then moved to Dallas, Texas, where she lived until her retirement from the American Association of Railroads and returned to Brownsville where she lived until her death. Nena was always very fond of children as recalled by her Brownsville nieces and nephews who remember her cheerfulness and marvelous courageous outlook on life just ten years short of a century.
Swimming was Nenas favorite sport and hobby since a very young age. When she lived in Dallas, she volunteered at the YWCA where she taught countless boys and girls to swim including the blind. She also taught water ballet and her groups received many honors in tournaments held in the Dallas area as well as other parts of the United States. Her students were very fond of her and kept in touch with her long after her retirement, many becoming her extended family. She was continuously thanked for the tireless interest and extraordinary training she gave her students and above all, the close friendships they developed throughout the years.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Desiderio Torres and Elvira Trevino de Torres. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Josephine Torres and Consuelo Connie Torres Ortiz and brothers, Frank E. Torres and Antonio Tony Torres.
Nena is survived by her nephew, Bob Torres and his wife Rachel nieces Lita Ortiz, Ester Blake Shelton and her pride and joy, her beloved grand nieces and nieces and nephews residing in Alaska, Austin, Brownsville, Delaware, Florida, Greece, and New York.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 by Fr. Michael Amesse, O.M.I., at Sacred Heart Church, 602 E. Elizabeth St. Interment will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Torres, Frank Torres, James Torres, and Sam Shelton.
