BROWNSVILLE, TX. – Cynthia Alcalá Rystedt entered into eternal rest on Thursday, the 1st of December 2022 surrounded by her family and loved ones. Cynthia was a lifelong resident of Brownsville, Texas. She was born on November 16, 1957, daughter of Solomon and Celestina Alcalá.
Cynthia attended Brownsville public schools, Texas Southmost College, and The University of Texas at Brownsville where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Education. She was an employee of the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District for over twenty years where she worked as a site coordinator. She devoted her life working with the students of the San Benito community and with a contagious smile and a noble heart, she selflessly touched the hearts and minds of students and fellow coworkers. She was one of the first to create and develop an award-winning chess program that brought home a Texas State Championship during the districts first year of competition.
Preceding Cynthia in death were her parents, Solomon and Celestina Alcalá.
Survivors include her siblings Judith Colunga, Irma Alcalá, Nora Dohm, Edwardo Alcalá, and Sandra Park; her nieces and nephews Stephan Colunga, Joey Colunga, Dennis Colunga, Bobby Dohm, Melissa Dohm, Amanda Ruiz, Andrea Ortiz, Victoria Park, and Cassandra Park.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, the 7th of December 2022 between the hours of one o’clock in the afternoon and nine o'clock at night, with the recitation of the holy rosary to begin at seven o'clock Wednesday evening within the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at two o’clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 8th of December 2022 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1914 Barnard Road, Brownsville. Interment will then follow, via an escorted procession, at Buena Vista Burial Park, 5 McDavitt Boulevard, Brownsville.
Honored to be serving as her pallbearers are Ricardo Alaniz Jr., Joe Colunga, Frank Ortiz Jr., Randy Park, Carlos Ruiz, and John Rystedt.
Cynthia was a devoted and loving sister and aunt whose personality, quick wit and way with words will always be remembered by those who loved her as her memory is our keepsake for which we shall carry with us wherever we go.
