DeHart Bergen III, age 83, of Los Fresnos, TX, passed away peacefully at his home with his wife and stepdaughter at his side on May 17, 2011.
Firstborn son of Hazel Vane Ridley deceased and DeHart Bergen Jr. deceased loving husband of 29 years to Margaret Bergen beloved brother of John Bergen Hannah dear father of Joyce Dodrill Krieger Mark and Janet Dodrill David Cox dear stepfather to Vanessa Valdez Frank, Valeria McMaster Patrick and Victoria McCallister dear uncle of Jocelyn Bergen Andrew Waegel and Elizabeth Dinkins Jeff beloved grandfather Didi of Maxwell Krieger, Nathan Krieger, Sarah McMaster, Daniel McMaster, Marissa Valdez, Mario Valdez, and Anthony Valdez and adored father of Robbie, the dog, and Fudge, the cat.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, De grew up in New York City with his mother and stepfather Maxwell Scott, and spent his summers as a child in Brewster, NY with his grandparents, Goya Hazel and Pop Arthur, and at Camp Wonposet in Bantam, Lake, CT. De went to high school at Phillips Exeter Academy in NH and college at Cornell and Columbia Universities.
He first worked for Texaco, then started working for Bausch and Lomb as a scientific products sales representative in 1971 in New York, and was promoted to district sales manager and regional sales manager which required him to move to Houston, TX, where he eventually met his wife, Margaret. De retired from Bausch and Lomb in 1986 and he and Margaret moved to Los Fresnos, TX in 1996.
De was a passionate golfer, had a beautiful singing voice, and sang in the South Texas Chorale, and was a volunteer for many years at Valley Baptist Medical Center in the orthopedic department. Despite numerous health problems and setbacks over the course of his life he was a member of AA for over 35 years, De was a fighter, and always remained a charming, warm, and optimistic person. The sound of his great laughter, and his remarkable strength and grace will be remembered forever by all those who were lucky enough to have known him.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 20, 2011 at the Church of the Advent Episcopal in Brownsville, TX.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Advent Memorial Fund, co the Church of the Advent Episcopal, 104 W. Elizabeth St., Brownsville, TX 78520.
The family wishes to express its gratitude to the wonderful caregivers at Odyssey Hospice, and to private caregivers, Gloria Robles and Sylvia Santana, who took such good care of De during his last few months.
