Longtime Brownsville educator, Delia DY Yznaga Prez, 89, passed away on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at her home surrounded by her children. Mrs. Prez was born on April 20, 1921 in San Antonio to Manuel Aniceto and Aurora Rios Yznaga. Her family moved to Brownsville in 1935. Delia graduated from Brownsville High School in 1938. Thereafter, Delia earned a Bachelors of Arts degree with a double major in Spanish and French from the University of Texas at Austin in 1942. While attending the University of Texas, Delia was chosen for the coveted title of Bluebonnet Belle. Upon graduating, Delia taught at the university laboratory and worked as a translator in San Antonio before returning to Brownsville where she married Alberto L. Prez.
Delia taught Spanish for the Brownsville ISD at Homer Hanna High School for 29 years and retired in 1982. Her retirement years were dedicated to volunteer work with the Pink Ladies Auxiliary. Delia was an avid reader and worldwide traveler. Her passion for travel took her from The Great Wall of China to walking the steps of Machu Picchu to riding a camel in Africa.
Delia was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Alberto L. Prez, her parents and siblings Dr. Eva Yznaga Seger and Hector Yznaga. She is survived by her children Diana and husband Ken, Albert and wife Linda, Edward and wife Vickie and David and wife Claudia and her numerous grandchildren Kristin, Katie, Christopher, Eric, Zachary, Ashlyn, Braden, David Jr. and Santiago.
Visitation will be held Friday, March 4, 2011 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm with the recitation of the holy rosary at 7:30 pm in the West Chapel at DarlingMouser Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Resurrection will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the internment immediately following at Buena Vista Burial Park.
Serving as pallbearers Matthew Seger, Dr. Bernard Seger, Dr. William Seger, Vincent Seger, Aniceto Yznaga, Daniel Yznaga, Christopher Prez, Eric Prez and Zachary Prez.
