Dr. Alberto Diaz de Leon R., M.D. F.A.C.S., 85, our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, colleague, and friend entered into glory of his eternal life on Thursday, June 5, 2014, at his residence in Brownsville surrounded by loved ones.
Dr. Daz de Len was born in Crdenas, San Luis Potos, Mxico. He received his Bachelors Degree from the Universidad Militar Latino Americana in Mexico City and received his Medical Degree from the University of Mexico.
After graduating from medical school, Dr. Diaz de Leon did his internship at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago, IL. He then did a year of General Surgery Residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA, followed by a four year residency in Surgical Oncology and General Surgery at Jeanes Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa, Memorial Hospital SloanKettering in New York City, and Ellis Fischel State Cancer Hospital in Columbia, MO. He was the Chief Resident in Thoracic Surgery for one year at Episcopal Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Diaz de Leon received his Board Certification in General Surgery in 1964.
In addition to tending to his patients, Dr. Diaz de Leon also served as a teacher at several universities among them the University of Tamaulipas in Mexico. Dr. Diaz de Leon was both the Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgery at Brownsville Medical Center now Valley Baptist Medical Center. He also served on several advisory boards as well.
Dr. Diaz de Leon was a member of the following professional associations: American College of Surgeons Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Local Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, Texas Medical Assoc., Southern Medical Assoc., American Medical Assoc., Cameron County Medical Assoc., Memorial Hospital Alumni Society and Resident Alumni SocietyAlbert Einstein Medical Center. Dr. Diaz de Leon received numerous awards throughout his career.
Dr. Diaz de Leon was a wellknown and respected member of our community having served the Rio Grande Valley and Matamoros as a surgeon for over 50 years. Dr. Diaz de Leon had privileges in Brownsville hospitals. Dr. Diaz de Leon was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed not only by his family and friends but by all those fortunate to have known him.
Dr. Diaz de Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Amonario and Amelia Diaz de Leon and a sister.
Left behind to eternally treasure their memories of him is his loving wife of 39 years, Nancy Diaz de Leon a daughter, Claudia Isela Lenz PhD and her husband Adam Lenz M.D. and a son, Alberto Diaz de Leon III M.D. and his wife Sarah Diaz de Leon M.D. four grandchildren: Paulina Natasha Lenz, Christopher Albert Lenz, Emily Sofia Diaz de Leon, and Eva Elizabeth Diaz de Leon two brothers, Amonario Diaz de Leon M.D. and Hector Diaz de Leon M.D., and a sister Belia Asiain as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 8, 2014, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the East Chapel at DarlingMouser Funeral Home with the recitation of the holy rosary scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening at DarlingMouser. The Funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 9, 2014, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1200 Lincoln Street. Committal services will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park.
Dr. Alberto Diaz de Leon III, Dr. Adam C. Lenz, Mario Fernandez, Mario Gonzalez, Jesus Lerma, and Robert Garcia are honored to be serving as Dr. Diaz de Leons pallbearers. Dr. Enrique Trapp will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
