Dr. Diamantina Freeberg

Dr. Diamantina "Diamond" Garza Freeberg passed away peacefully on April 30, 2015 at McAllen Heart Hospital.

Born in 1945 to Ygnacio and Diamantina Garza in Brownsville, Texas, she was a graduate of Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas with a B.A. in English and a graduate of The University of Tulsa in Tulsa, Oklahoma with an M.A. in Experimental Psychology and Ed.D. in Research and Education. With a passion for education, she spent over 35 years of her life dedicated to teaching students and advancing the quality of education available in the Rio Grande Valley. Serving as a professor, chairman and associate dean, she saw college education in Brownsville transform from Texas Southmost College to the University of Texas at Brownsville and recently the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. In addition, for two decades, she spent her summers mentoring and teaching staff and guiding campers at Greene Family Camp in Bruceville, Texas. The mark she made on all she encountered, but especially at the University and Greene Family Camp will be forever remembered.

Her unwavering dedication to the University is matched only by her love for her family. She especially loved spending time with her husband on and near the water and seeing her children pursue their dreams and accomplish their goals. She will be remembered for her unfailing integrity, her passionate pursuit of educational advancement for all and the love for her family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ygnacio and Diamantina Garza.

She is survived by her husband, Jim; her daughter Lesley, husband John and granddaughter, Lily; and her sons: Dr. Sheldon Freeberg and Adrian Freeberg.
