BROWNSVILLE, TX. - Elida M. Garza entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, the 31st of July 2024 at Spanish Meadows surrounded by her loving family. She was 91 years of age.
Elida Garza was born to Felicitas Cuevas in 1933. Her biological father, Lazaro Mandujano, was not part of her life. An only child, Elida as raised by several strong independent women who preceded her in death, her mother, Felicitas; her aunt, Maria; and her maternal grandmother, Antonia Cuevas. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Eliberto "Beto" Garza; her son, Eliberto, Jr.; as well as numerous aunts and uncles who were all an important part of her life.
Her mother, Felicitas, became ill when Elida was in high school, so her Aunt Paula and her uncles, Angel and Juan, were instrumental in helping her mother get medical care, and enrolling Elida in high school in Richmond so that she could finish her senior year. She graduated from Lamar Consolidated High School in Richmond, Texas. Her mother passed away when Elida was 20 years old. After high school, she started working at retail stores in Brownsville, and continued in retail for most of her working career.
She met the love of her life, Eliberto "Beto" Garza, in her mid-twenties and they married in 1959. They started a family and raised four children, Elsa "Belinda", Eliberto Jr., Leobardo "Leo", and Edna "Lisa". She has five grandchildren between them, Sarah and Sean Patlan, Isaac and Erick Garza, and Victoria Cavazos, who are left to cherish the many wonderful memories of their grandmother.
After her husband Eliberto retired from the Brownsville Police Department, they were very involved in their grandchildren’s lives. Their grandchildren Isaac, Sarah, Sean, and Erick were all blessed by their presence – but especially the youngest, Victoria, with whom they were very active – picking her up from school, and participating in school activities and child rearing.
Elida and Eliberto loved dining out, dancing and travel. They enjoyed going to the casino – and they took home many winning pots from Coushatta Casino in Louisiana. Her family is comforted by the fact that they are reunited in Heaven, and are dancing together again.
