Ellener Jule Lawrence, 72, passed away early Wednesday October 27, 2010, at Sunshine Haven Hospice in Olmito, Texas, after a brief, but complicated illness. Ellener was born December 13, 1937 in Erie, PA and moved to Brownsville with her family in 1946, where she lived and dedicated the majority of her life to teaching.
Ellener graduated from Brownsville High School in 1955. She received her Associate of Arts Degree from Texas Southmost College in 1957 and her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Pan American College, Edinburg, Texas, in 1961.
She was a teacher with BISD beginning her career in 1957 at Ebony Hts. Elementary, now R.L. Martin Elementary. She also taught various grades at Clearwater Elementary, Victoria Heights Elementary, and Del Castillo Elementary. She retired from teaching in 1998 and substituted until May 2002. Ms Lawrences outstanding dedication to her students and to BISD was recognized by her being selected as an Outstanding Teacher by Whos Who Among Americas Teachers in 1996, 1998, and 2004, and by BSID as Outstanding Teacher of the Year Finalist in 1996.
Ellener enjoyed travel, reading, political discussion, history, gardening and dogs. She was dedicated to helping the community as a patron of the All Souls Unitarian Church and donated to several local charities.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Eldred P. and Helen M. Wagner and her husband Harry Lawrence. She is survived by her daughter, Leesa Helene Brockman of San Diego, CA. her stepson Richard Bennett of San Francisco, CA her brother, Frederick W. Wagner, of Walton, Nebraska and her longtime friend and attendant, Ms. Monce Garcia of Matamoros, Mexico.
Visitation and Memorial Services will be held at DarlingMouser Funeral Home. The visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 04, 2010. The Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 6, 2010. Ellener will be buried at 10 a.m. on Monday, November 8, 2010 at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
