Emerita Cristina Aguilar, 84, beloved sister, aunt, and friend entered into the glory of her eternal life on Tuesday, October 22, 2019, at her residence with her loving family at her side.
Emerita who was born in Port Isabel, was a lifetime resident of Brownsville. Emerita lived with her mother and sisters. After a short stint as a Sister of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament, Emerita returned to Brownsville and went to work at the Immaculate Conception School. She assisted Sr. Vianney Uyeno, I.W.B.S. as a teacher aide and in the candy store for 6 years. Emerita enjoyed reminiscing about the joy of working with the children and how the young boys loved teasing her and trying to scare her. Her favorite memory was about how as a young boy, Dr. Juan Manuel Martinez, would call her “Miss America.
Ten years ago, Emerita went to live with her niece and grand-nephew, Mary Lelia and Esteban Lopez.
Emerita attended Alpine Day Care and looked forward to going there every day. She loved playing Loteria and was always winning and bringing home her prizes.
Living with Lelia and Esteban provided a special bond with her grandnephew, who was also her partner in crime. They both covered up one for the other.
Emerita was raised in the Catholic church and for first 70+ years was a parishioner at Immaculate Conception Cathedral. She became a parishioner at Our Lord of Divine Mercy 8 years ago. She loved attending all church functions and was affectionately greeted as “Tia” by all.
