Emilio Coy, Jr.

September 10, 1943 — July 20, 2021

Brownsville, Texas

Emilio Coy, Jr.

Emilio Coy, Jr., was called to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.

Emilio was born in 1943 to Belia Rodriguez Coy and Emilio Coy at his family home in San Benito (El Calaboz), TX. He attended Encantada Elementary School and graduated from Los Fresnos High School in 1962. He attended Texas Southmost College and then transferred to East Texas State University (now Texas A&M University-Commerce) earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education.

After graduation, he got his first teaching assignment in Brownsville. He then went on to work for the Dallas Independent School District for over 30 years. He started out as a teacher, then was promoted to Assistant Principal, and ultimately Principal. Emilio worked at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels. Emilio received a Master of Liberal Arts degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

Emilio loved ranch life and always had a yearning to return to South Texas, which he and Delia did after retirement. He was a great cook of Mexican cuisine and could make the best beans anywhere. Emilio was a self-made “Mr. Fix It”. He could roof shingle an entire roof by himself, install new cabinets, tile a bathroom, remove an entire engine from a car (not the new ones of course), and put it back in working order. He could fix anything, and if he could not find a part he would “Mexican engineer” something that would work.

He will be deeply missed but we will always carry his memory in our hearts.

Emilio was a devoted and loving husband to his wife of 52 years, Delia Farias Coy. Together they raised two children--Daniel Coy of McKinney, TX, and Alexa (Noah) Lott of Columbia, MO. The pride and joy of Emilio’s life was his only grandson, Jared Austin Coy of Brownsville. He is also survived by two brothers:  Raul Coy of Dallas and Carlos (Ofelia) Coy of Red Oak, TX; three sisters: Carlota (Joe) Leal of San Benito, Rita (Jimmy) De La Fuente also from San Benito, and Amelia Howland of Dallas, TX; a sister-in-law, Dora (Bob) Cackley of Brownsville plus many nieces and nephews and extended family members.

Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July 23, 2021, and continue through 9:00 p.m. with the recitation of the rosary scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1914 Barnard Road. We ask that everyone meet at St. Mary’s on Saturday, July 24, 2021, for the Funeral Mass scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning. All services will conclude after the Mass and in accordance with Emilio’s wishes, he will be cremated.
