BROWNSVILLE, TX. - Enrique "Rick-Henry" Trevino passed away on Tuesday, the 10th of December 2024. He was 80 years of age.
Rick was a graduate of Brownsville High School, Class of 1962. While in school he was active in band, choir, and was a cheerleader at Harry L. Faulk Jr. High School, Brownsville High School, and Universidad Technologico de Monterrrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. At BHS he was instrumental in organizing the Golden Eaglettes Drill Team during his sophomore year.
Rick served in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Minot, North Dakota. After leaving the Air Force he began working for Brown & Root, Inc. at the Union Carbide Plant at the Port of Brownsville after which he was hired by Union Carbide Chemical & Plastics Corporation. He worked in the Production Accounting Department and as Unit Clerk in the Laboratory, Oxygen, and Utilites Departments. He was promoted to Department Head of Receiving, then served as Purchase Order Expeditor, Junior Buyer, Inventory Control Manager, and ultimately as Purchase Order Writing Coordinator (Contract Buyer) for the company.
While still working for Union Carbide, Rick opened his dance studio, Ballet International, and also began a ten year tenure with Texas Southmost College as a ballroom instructor.
Rick's dance training began while in junior high school. He began his dance studies with Miss Jane Jennings and studied under numerous professional dance instructors in both group and private classes at dance intensives. He was a member of Assosacion Nacional de Grupos Folklorics and studied under the auspises of Ballet Folklorico Nacional de Mexico de Sylvia Lozano. Additionally, Rick performed with this ballet company in Dallas, Texas.
Rick was a folklorico dance consultant for the Brownsville Independent School District and at Lt. George Gutierrez Middle School in Harlingen, Texas. He was also a ballroom instructor at Lopez High School and folklorico dance consultant at Porter and Pace High Schools. Additionally, he was drill team and twirling instructor at Vela Middle School, Canales Elementary, Clearwater Elementary, and Ortiz Elementary. He also served as show choir dance instructor at Faulk Middle School.
Rick also served as show choir dance instructor at Winston Churchill High School in San Antonio, Texas and at San Benito High School in San Benito, Texas. He taught ballroom and jazz at Texas Southmost College and The University of Texas at Brownsville and jazz instructor at Kids College Summer Program at the University.
While at UTB, Rick also taught English Grammar with the Bridge Program and was eventually promoted to Lead Instructor. He also served as a substitute instructor in the Language Institute, Community Projects Presenter, and Counselor at the Texas Workforce Commission Office under the auspices of UTB.
UTB awarded Rick "Outstanding Instructor" for his participation in the 21st Century Program of BISD. Rick received a lifetime achievement award titled, Broche de Pro Hispanic Ambassador Excellence Award, awarded by the Revival of Cultural Arts.
Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Alicia Trevino and Jose Jimenez Trevino and by his brother, Jose Jimenez Trevino, Jr.
Rick is survived by his sister, Sylvia Trevino Tucker of La Porte, Texas and her daughter, Monique Yvette Marnell of Chappell Hill, Texas; Monique’s children, David Eric Marinelli, Jr. and Nichole Alicia Marnell; Sylvia’s son Tony Trevino of Chappell Hill, Texas and wife Kristine Trevino and their son, Wyatt Trevino. Additional family members of Rick’s departed brother Jose Jimenez Trevino, Jr. are as follows: Daniel David Trevino of La Habra, California, Lillian Mary Trevino of Orange, California, and her son, Samuel Alfonso Cordero, Gerald ‘Jerry’ Richard Trevino of Santa Ana, California, wife Jackie Trevino and their children Briana Nicole Trevino and Joshua Daniel Trevino, Joseph Michael Trevino of Wildomar, California, wife Donna Trevino and their children Belle Joselynne Trevino and Joseph Michael Trevino, Jr., Patricia Rose Hillard of Santa Ana, California, husband David Hillard and their children Ella Rose Hillard, Melody Simone Hillard, and Wyatt David Hillard.
A memorial service will be held at a later date, time, and location yet to be announced.
