He spent the bulk of his professional life with Fruehauf Corporation in Detroit, Michigan, and was Vice-President of Reliability and Quality Assurance ant the time of his retirement in 1985. He was also a nationally known expert in the field of trailer manufacturing with numerous patents, including the revolutionary Chosy Gussett.
Upon retirement, Gene and Ruth relocated to Fuquay-Varina, N.C., where Gene became active in the Lions Club, the Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church, and the newly built county club golf course. Gene loved to play golf and said that one reason why he chose Fuqua-Varina as a retirement spot was because he could play golf ten months out of the year, leaving January for cleaning his clubs and February for visiting son John and family in Brownsville, Texas. Incidentally, Gene had two holes-in-one during his golf career.
Gene was very active in the church, serving on numerous boards and committees all of his adult life. He was trained in Steven Ministries and worked in that capacity al the Fuquay-Varina church through his last Sunday before moving to Texas. Gene loved to sing with the church choir and continued as long as he was able.
Gene and Ruth move to Brownsville, Texas in 2007 to be with son John and his family. His family agrees that God broke the mold after he made Gene. He was the acknowledged leader of a large extended family, a wise and caring man, and a person of comfort to many. He will be missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Brownsville at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 9, 2009. Interment of ashes will be at White Chapel Memorial Park Cemetery in Troy, MI at a later date.
