BROWNSVILLE, TX. - “Love the Lord God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” Deuteronomy 6:5
On Wednesday, the 21st of June 2023, Fidela Gorena eagerly went home to be with her Lord and Savior. She was eighty-eight years of age.
Fidela was born in San Benito, Texas on March 7, 1935, and then moved to Brownsville, Texas as a young child, attending Brownsville public schools. She loved school and was always eager to learn. Our Mom also liked having her own money and began working at a very young age. Upon graduating high school, she married and began a family, working at first at the Cameron County Courthouse. She then worked for the U.S. Border Patrol in McAllen, Texas. Next, she worked for U.S. Customs in Brownsville, and once she got her college degree, eventually advanced to being a Customs In Bond Officer at the Port of Brownsville. She was an adjunct instructor at Texas Southmost College in conjunction to working full time. After retiring from the federal government, she continued actively working, selling insurance, selling beauty products, teaching English, English as a Second Language, UETA, shippers and manifests, and teaching/substitute teaching elementary school at Porter and Magnolia school districts. Despite that busy schedule, Mom made time for praying, reading her Bible, cooking, baking, sewing, reading, TV watching, playing the piano for the church, singing in the church choir, participating in band boosters, PTA, Zonta Club, spending time with her children who she called “her jewels,” her beloved parents, her precious siblings, and her close friends. However, her greatest joys were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by all those fortunate to have known her.
Preceding Fidela in death were her parents, Dionicio and Fidela Escobedo Gorena; her siblings Eduardo (Dora+), Irene Cavazos (Octaviano+), Linda, Irene, Dionicio II, Dario, Ninfa Rivera (Eloy+), Dora, Juan, Dorcas, and Dionicio III; her nephew, George E. Gorena; and her nieces, Ninfa Struss and Denise Yambra.
Also preceding her in death are her children, Paul Infante (Nina) and Brenda Ingram; their father, Pablo Infante; and her step-daughter, Valerie Danielle Vera.
Fidela is survived by siblings David Gorena (Debbie), Dora Zavaleta (Robert), Delia Hampe (Robert), Delfina Eberle, Diana Saltzman (Alan), and Diego Gorena (Dina).
Left behind to treasure their memories of her is her daughter, Lina Salinger (Joel); son, David D. Infante (Polly+); step-son, D. Frederic Vera; and step-daughter, Cristi Marie Vera; her grandchildren Sabrina Langhorst (Josh), Mia L. Infante, James D. Infante, Joseph Infante (Sheridan), Jacob P. Infante, Sarah A. Infante, and Bryan Ingram (Ashley); her great-grandchildren Aiden J. Langhorst, Cameron P. Langhorst, Olivia J. Infante, Nora J. Infante, unborn great-grandson Theodore J. Infante, Liam Ingram, Titan Ingram, and Haven Ingram. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, other extended family members, and a host of friends.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, the 27th of June 2023 between the hours of five o’clock in the afternoon and nine o'clock at night within the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home.
