Florence Hazel Brummett Shands died Wednesday, 30 Dec 2009 at the Meadows Assisted Living in Brownsville, Texas. br brBorn 30 June 1918 in the small community of Tripp in Dallas County, Texas, Hazel and her husband Carlton came to the Valley in the late 1940s and reared their children in Brownsville, Texas. brbr A Daughter of the Republic of Texas whose ancestors fought in every American War, Hazel was very proud of her heritage and her family. brA life time member of the United Methodist Church, she spent many years involved in the WSCS Womens Society of Christian Service as well as teaching Sunday School and participating within the life of the Church. She was an accomplished artist who won many awards over the years for her paintings; she also wrote and published two books of Poetry. brbrHazel was preceded in death by her parents Carl Chester Brummett and Ollie Fay Orr; her husband, Murray Carlton Shands; her grandson, James Carlton Caskey; her brothers EdLouis Edwin Brummett Lois Evelyn Shortnacy and KaySidney Russell Brummett Clara Faye Shortnacy. brbr Survived by her children: John Carlton Shands Mary Jane Hale and Ella Sondra Shands Charles Robert Graff; her grandchildren: Tracy Jane Shands Brad Buchanan, Mary Allison Shands Dennis Arthur Acosta, Jeanne Courtenay Shands, Everett Shands Caskey Gene Joseph Street, Wesley Wyatt CaskeyShelley Lynne Everett; and great grandchildren, Jordan Haley Buchanan, Maya Meadow Caskey, Jaycee Ella Acosta due in March 2010. Two step-grandchildren, Dr. Sarah Louise Graff Jason Gregory Bodner, Mitchell Craig Graff Jessica Ann Fallon and step-great grand baby, Jonas Fallon Graff plus a niece, nephews, great nieces and nephews. br brWife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and Aunt, Hazel answered to many names, including Mia, TuTu and Nother Mama to her grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all who loved her.brbrGraveside services will be held at Buena Vista Burial Park on Saturday 02 Jan 2010. Her son in law, The Reverend Charles Graff will officiate.
