On July 3, a legend passed away. Galdina Melndez Mireles died at the age of 98. She is survived by her daughters and sons, Virginia Vega, Frank Jr., Tony John, and Leonarda. She is also survived by her sister, Virginia Lartigue, and her brother, John Torres. Her husband, Frank C. Mireles and her son, Manuel M. Mireles preceded her in death.
Her children, brother and sister, brotherinlaw, daughters and sonsinlaw, nieces, 10 grandchildren, nephews and 21 greatgrandchildren mourn the loss of a sister, mother, aunt, motherinlaw, and grandmother. At the same time, they celebrate the moments and years in which she enriched their lives.
Galdina was born in Villa de Reyes, San Luis Potosi, Mexico. At a very early age, she migrated with her family to the U.S.A. She lived in the Midwest until she married her husband, Frank Carrera Mireles. They came to live in Brownsville where she was a very active member of the community. She was a woman for all seasons caring, loving, hard working, and extremely creative. She volunteered whenever asked and helped when needed. Her positive attitude, her ability to listen, motivate, and encourage had something to do with her almost living a century.
Galdina was, indeed, a great individual, an independent spirit, and a most devout Catholic. We celebrate her life for she inspired many. May she rest in peace in the Lords House.
