Gilberto Resendez, Jr.

BROWNSVILLE, TX. - Gilberto Resendez, Jr. entered into eternal rest on Monday, the 29th of July 2024 at Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville, Texas. He was 87 years of age.

Gilberto was a man that built his life around family, faith, and friends. He developed early on a strong work ethic from his upbringing in his parents farm life, a skill set that he instilled into his children. Motivated by faith, he participated as a deacon in the Catholic Church where he attended regularly and assisted in many fundraising events. 

His lifelong work in road construction left a mark in the community he lived in for 87 years, such as the restoration of Downtown Elizabeth Street, the FM 802 HEB parking lot, and the paving of highways to Port Isabel and South Padre Island Queen Isabella Causeway, in addition to many other job sites scattered throughout his community and the Rio Grande Valley. 

He enjoyed music and dancing but he could not carry a tune or dance. He had a good sense of humor but he could not tell a joke well as he would forget the punch line and would make one up instead. His strong will and faith made him a fighter and this was evident as he battled a long list of medical issues for several years. He was blessed with a hardworking mind set, a loving wife, five devoted children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, in addition to several long life friendships. He will be remembered and missed by all who knew him. 

Preceding Gilberto in death were his parents, Gilberto Resendez, Jr. and Francisca Ruenes Resendez; his brother, Ernesto Resendez; and his sisters, Maria Elena Resendez and Maria De la Luz Resendez.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Maria Resendez; his children George Resendez (Toni), Norma Resendez, Joel Resendez (Alicia), Gilberto Resendez III, Belinda Herrera and best friend Alejandro Gomez; his brothers Wiley Resendez (Hellon+), Ricardo Resendez (Lupita), Jose Angel Resendez (Gloria), Joe Resendez (Anna), Noe Resendez (Delia), and Juan Resendez; his sisters Maria De Los Angeles Resendez, Maria Concepcion "Connie" Resendez, and Irma Conran (Mark); his grandchildren Christina, George Jr., Marie, Michael, Nicky, Joel Jr., Kasandra, Christian, Alyssa, Victoria, and Jordan; his great-grandchildren Emma, Ethan, Olivia, Brandon, Aubree, Ashton, and Kendrick; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, the 2nd of August 2024 between the hours of twelve noon and nine o'clock at night, with the recitation of the holy rosary to be recited at seven o'clock Friday evening within the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home. 

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at two o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 3rd of August 2024, at St. Luke Catholic Church, 2800 Rockwell Drive, Brownsville. Interment will then follow, via escorted procession, at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4464 Old Port Isabel Road, Brownsville.

Honored to serve as his pallbearers are George Resendez, Joel Resendez, Gilbert Resendez, Christian Resendez, Jordan Herrera, and Brandon Stevens.
