Mr. Hector Y. Gonzalez, 72, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend entered into the glory of his eternal life on Sunday, July 01, 2012 after a hard fought battle with cancer.
A native and lifetime resident of Brownsville, Hector attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School and then St. Josephs Academy where he participated and lettered in all sports and in all extracurricular clubs. He was a member of the 1957 basketball champions, placed 3rd in the Shot Put and 6th in the 100 yd. dash in state competition. His Senior year, he participated in football and baseball and he was awarded the as Athlete of the Year and Best in Track awards and honored with two banners which are displayed in the St. Joseph gym. He graduated 4th in his class.
After graduating from St. Joe, he attended Texas Southmost College and then transferred to the University of TexasAustin where he obtained his Bachelors Degree in Education. He later obtained his Masters in counseling from Texas AM UniversityKingsville.
Hector returned to his hometown and started a teachingcoaching career with the BISD that would span several years. He began at Central Jr. High and then moved on to high school where he taught and coached football and track. His crosscountry track team won the State Championship in 1968. After retiring from the BISD, Hector started a new career working for US Customs. He then moved on to the Federal Probation Dept. where he served as a federal probation officer under Judge Reynaldo Garza.
He later retired from the probation dept. and then returned to the BISD as an elementary school counselor. Hector gave his all to the children that were entrusted to him, until health issues mandated his final retirement.
A devout Catholic, he was a longtime parishioner at St. Josephs Catholic Church where he served as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. In his spare time Hector enjoyed golfing and going fishing, but his true love was dancing the Jarabe Tapatio Mexican Hat Dance with his wife, Mary Rose.
Hector was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by all those fortunate to have known him.
Hector was preceded in death by his parents, Trinidad and Margarita Gonzalez and his brother, Frank Gonzalez.
Left behind to eternally treasure their memories of him is his loving and devoted wife of 50 years, Mary Rose Gonzalez his children: Hector E. Melanie Gonzalez, Ruben M. Stephanie Gonzalez, Oscar S. Sheila Gonzalez, Diana R. Terry Kelley, and Rene D. Doobie Gonzalez his grandchildren: Stefan, Rachel, Olivia, Romeo, and Kiana and three greatgrandchildren.
He will also be missed by his three sisters, Margaret Aguilar, Dorina Pablo Javier de la Fuente, and Irma, aka Elvis Gonzalez four brothers, Tomas Lupita Gonzalez, Ruben Rosario Gonzalez, Arnoldo Alma Gonzalez and Johnny Karen Gonzalez and numerous nieces, nephews, other extended family members and a host of friends.
Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. and continue through 9 p.m. in the East Chapel at DarlingMouser on Wednesday, July 4, 2012, with the recitation of the holy rosary scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday evening at DarlingMouser. The Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 5, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 555 W. St. Franics St. Interment will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park.
Romeo Gonzalez, Stefan Gonzalez, Ruben Gonzalez, Kint Thornberg, Anthony Bock, Frankie Gonzalez, and Juan Valerio Antonio are honored to be serving as Hectors pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Arnoldo Gonzalez, Ruben Gonzalez, John Gonzalez, Tomas Gonzalez, and Henry Gonzalez.
