Henry Alfred Bebon Sr., age 86, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Valley Regional Medical Center.
He was born December 1925 in Brownsville to U. S. Army Sergeant Frank Bebon Sr. and Maria Mireles. Born into a military family, his father Frank Bebon, served in the Army and fought in World War I and his grandfather, Jacob Bebon, was a soldier in the Spanish American War.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lesbia R. Bebon a sister, Gloria B. Fragoso a brother, Frank Bebon Jr. and is daughter, Zandra Chickie Reed.
Henry is survived by daughter, Cynthia D. Bebon, Ed. D, his sons: Henry Aida Bebon and Norman Lourdes Bebon his sisterinlaw, Olga Bebon, eight grandchildren, four greatgrandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews and other extended family members. Henry was greatly loved and will be profoundly missed by all those fortunate to have known him.
Henry was a graduate of Brownsville High School before being drafted into the U.S. Navy in June, 1944 during World War II, trained in the naval base in San Diego, California and sent to the Marshall Islands in the South Pacific. After he was released from the Navy in 1946, he returned to Brownsville where he met his future wife, Maria Lesbia Ramirez at a dance. He knew she was the one so he proposed to her and asked her to wait for him. He enlisted in the Army in 1947 and was sent to Tokyo, Japan for 2 years after which he returned to marry his wife. They were married over 50 years when she passed away in 2001. He worked at the U.S. Post Office for 37 years until he retired in 1988.
Mr. Bebon was very active in numerous civic and religious organizations such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of which his father was a charter member, American Legion John Hanson Post 43, St. Marys Mens Club, The Knights of Columbus and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees NARFE. He was also a longstanding member of the American Legion Veterans Honor Guard serving the funeral needs of deceased veterans. His contributions to these organizations spanned more than 50 years making him a lifetime member of the VFW, American Legion and the Knights of Columbus 3rd and 4th Degree.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 in the East Chapel at DarlingMouser Funeral Home with the recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 16, 2012 at St. Marys Catholic Church, 1914 Barnard Rd. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum at Buena Vista Burial Park. Members of the family are honored to be serving as Henrys pallbearers.
