Henry Montalvo of Brownsville went to be with the Lord on April 14, 2009. He was born on October 17, 1920 in San Benito, Texas to Ismael and Francisca Montalvo. He graduated from San Benito High School and subsequently enlisted in the United States Navy. Upon his return to civilian life, he attended Southwest Texas State University where he earned both Bachelor and Master degrees in the field of Education. It was during this time that he fell in love with Herlinda Trevino, whom he married on December 26, 1948. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
As a Flight Engineer in the Navy, he was stationed in various locations within the Pacific Theater during World War II. On December 7, 1941 he was serving at Pearl Harbor and considered himself fortunate to have survived the attack. After retirement, he became an active member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. He and his wife attended annual reunions nationwide, the most recent in December 2008 at the Admiral Nimitz Museum in Fredericksburg, Texas.
Henry began his career in education in 1951 with the San Benito school district where he was a teacher and coach. He often spoke of the district championships won at San Benito Junior High School while he was the Coach. He moved his wife and family to Brownsville in 1960 to begin his career as an administrator at Stell Junior High School and later Brownsville High School. He retired in 1984 after having been the Principal of Cummings Junior High School for nine years.
Surviving Henry are his wife Herlinda and children Richard Montalvo, Linda Montalvo Hill, and Sammy Montalvo Cary of Brownsville; Sylvia Yvonne Gonzalez Carlos of Austin; and Judy Montalvo Selya Ira of Houston. Also surviving Papa are his six grandchildren: Jordan, Sarah, Garrett, Zachary, Leslie, Steven and great granddaughter, Aubriana. He is also survived by his younger brother Rene Montalvo, Sr. of San Benito.
Viewing will be from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm on April 16, 2009 at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home. The family will be greeting visitors from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
A rosary will be conducted immediately following the viewing at 7:00 pm.
A mass will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, April 17, 2009 at St. Marys Catholic Church, 1914 Barnard Road in Brownsville, to be followed by burial at Mont Meta Cemetery, 26170 N. Highway 345, San Benito. Military Honors will be rendered by the VFW Post 2035 under the direction of District Commander Luis Lucio.
Honored to be pallbearers will be Richard, Sammy and Steven Montalvo, Jordan and Garrett Hill, Carlos and Zachary Gonzalez and Ira Selya.
