Ignacio C. Mata, 91, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016, at Spanish Meadows Nursing Home.
Nacho, as he was affectionately known to all, was born in San Antonio, Texas, and was a long time resident of Brownsville. He was well known in downtown Brownsville, having been a devoted employee at Olvera Shoe Repair Shop for over 30 years. Even though Nacho was not a native of Brownsville, he had an extensive knowledge of the history of our community. He loved playing Mexican Loteria and scratch off Lotto tickets. Nacho was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed not only by his family and friends, but by all those fortunate enough to have known him.
Nacho was preceded in death by his mother, Maria C. Mata; an infant daughter, Inda Maricela Mata; his first wife, Eloisa Martinez Mata; his second wife, Norberta Mata; a step-son, Vicente Rodriguez; a brother, Silverio Mata; and a nephew, Antonio Garcia.
Nacho is survived by his son, Ignacio Valentin "Coach Mata" (Frances G.) Mata Sr.; his daughter, Inda Marisela Mata; a grandson, Ignacio Valentin Mata Jr.; a granddaughter, Eloisa Mata; two great-granddaughters: Victoria Beatrice "Tori" and Gabriella Paloma "Gabi" Gonzalez; a sister, Barbarita Mata; a step-son, Jose Rodriguez and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. and continue through 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 01, 2017, in the East Chapel at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home. The recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening at Darling-Mouser. The Funeral Mass is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 02, 2017, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1200 Lincoln St., Brownsville. Committal services will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park.
Ignacio Valentin Mata Sr., Ignacio Valentin Mata Jr., Albert Martinez, Hector Molina, Amancio Martinez, and Noe Lopez are honored to be serving as Nacho's pallbearers. Eloisa Mata, Tori and Gabi Gonzalez and Gilberto Martinez will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Nacho's family would like to thank all the staff at Spanish Meadows for all they did for Nacho while he was under their care.
