James Lee Shelton of Brownsville, Texas passed from this life on September 13, 2010. Jim was born on October 8, 1929 to James L. and Blanche Shelton , farmers in the Hanover, Indiana area. He chose the Air Force as his career and was stationed across the country and did two tours of duty overseas in the Far East. He maintained relationships with his fellow servicemen and reconnected with them in later years at reunions. Upon retirement from the Air Force, Jim settled his family in Galveston where he owned and operated Sunrise Surf Shop for many years. He moved to Port Isabel in 1974 where he opened a group of retail and souvenir stores on South Padre Island under the name of Hawaiian Village. Jim also started the South Padre Island Market Days. After closing the Hawaiian Village stores, he retired to Brownsville.
Jim will be remembered for many things including his kindness in helping with the care of many older neighbors and family members in their latter years. His generosity with friends and family will not be forgotten along with his wonderful capability of growing beautiful roses and an abundance of fruits and vegetables, reminding us of his farming roots. Father, husband, grandfather, greatgrandfatherJim will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered for the special person that he was.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James Lee and Blanche Shelton a sister, Nadine Manning and 3 brothers: Richard D., Donald K., and George Shelton.
Jim is survived by his wife Catherine Shelton of Brownsville, Texas his daughter, Gina Marie Edwards and her spouse Rocky of Wimberly, Texas his son, Jerry Wayne Shelton and his wife Nancy of Kyle, Texas three grandchildren Ryan Mlcak and his wife Lisa of Helotes, Texas, Lewanna Campbell and her spouse Jason of Kyle, Texas and Amy Shelton Sierra Lana of Kyle, Texas three greatgranddaughters and three greatgrandsons two stepchildren, Monique Stachowiak and Michael Carre, both of Brownsville, Texas four stepgrandchildren of Brownsville, Texas 3 brothers: Prentis, William, and Daniel L. Shelton 5 sisters: Belva Tingle, Betty Lou Thorne, Ruth June Short, Elizabeth Quiggle, and Bonita Jones 2 sistersinlaw, Bonita Shelton and Treva Shelton and twentyfour nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Harrell Funeral Home of Kyle, Texas 5124431366. A graveside military service and burial will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
