Jesse Benton, age 90, a long time Brownsville educator passed away February 26 at Valley Regional Medical Center.
He was retired from BISD after 43 years as a teacher, coach and Principal. He started as a coach for the Red Ants in 1942 and became the assistant principal of the technical school.
Jesse Benton was the first Principal at Faulk Junior High and in 1975 he became the Principal at Stell Middle School until he retired in 1985. He was a dedicated educator and cared about his students.
Jesse Benton and two other educators founded the Brownsville Teachers Credit Union. He was a dedicated member of the Downtown Lions Club for over 50 years, helping with various service projects and fund-raisings. For many years he was the chairman of the Lions eyesight committee helping many young people get eye exams and glasses.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Evelyn, his parents and a brother. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Jack and Becky, Janet and Steve, Frank and Vicky, his grandchildren, Jill, Jenna, Erek, Nicole and Katherine, his sister Dortha and brothers, John, Bill and Jerry and nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 12 noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, February 28, 2008 in the chapel of Darling-Mouser Funereal Home, 945 Palm Blvd.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, February 29 in the chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home with interment to follow at Buena Vista Burial Park.
