John Joseph Mullane

BROWNSVILLE, TX. – John Joseph Mullane entered into eternal rest on Sunday, the 29th of January 2023 at Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville, Texas with his daughter by his side. He was eighty-four years of age.

John was born in County Limerick, Ireland on March 22, 1938, son of the late John Mullane and Hanorah O’Dea Mullane. John left high school to enlist in the Irish Army where he served for several years before marrying Madge V. McEleney of Donegal, Ireland on December 26, 1960. They later immigrated to the United States of America, becoming naturalized citizens. In 1969, John moved his family to Western Australia. He and his family returned to the United States in 1976, living in Colorado and California. Most recently, John resided in Brownsville, Texas.

While in Australia, he founded the Western Australian Irish Athletic Club. He enjoyed sports and Irish music and was an accomplished tin whistle and flute player. He hosted and joined in many traditional Irish Music sessions, singing and playing instruments, in Australia and the Denver-Boulder area of Colorado. While living in Colorado, he also obtained a pilot’s license and occasionally enjoyed flying small planes. During his time in California, he was a longtime member of the Santa Cruz Track Club and had enjoyed running when younger and race walking in his retirement years.

Preceding John in death was his beloved wife, Madge, in 1986; his parents, John Mullane and Hanorah Mullane (O’Dea); his brothers, Liam Mullane and Michael Mullane; and his sisters, Joan Cleary and Kitty Ryan.

Survivors include his children Marian Cadenasso (Dick), Dr. Geraldine Mullane, John Mullane (Lydia), and Robert Mullane (Christy); his nine grandchildren; his five great-grandchildren; his sister, Nora McEleney; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family in Ireland, England, and the United States.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Ahmad Karkoutly, Dr. Lorenzo Pelly, Dr. Marcelo Boek, Dr. Luis Gaitan, Dr. Charles Zavala, Dr. Fahad Javed, Dr. Syed Mahmood, and the staff of Valley Regional Medical Center, especially his ED, 3rd floor, and ICU nursing staff, for the excellent and compassionate care they provided for John.
