José Ramón Hinojosa, 81, beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, August 22, 2017, at Valley Regional Medical Center surrounded by family and friends.
Ramon, as all his friends called him, was a descendant of a pioneer Brownsville family and lifetime resident of Brownsville. Ramon was elected in 2012 and his six-year term will expire 2018. In the short time that he was at TSC, he cast important votes dealing with the college's accreditation, the selection of a new president, and led the efforts to establish relationships with other governmental entities, and NGOs having to do with vocational-technical endeavors for TSC students. He was also very instrumental in forging new relationships between colleges on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande and TSC to provide a mutually beneficial opportunities to students on both sides of the river. Ramon literally rose from the bottom up spending 35 years in education as an elementary, middle and high school teacher, assistant superintendent, and superintendent. He also directed federal, bilingual education and parental involvement programs. He held a Bachelor of Arts in English and Government degree from St. Mary's University, and a Master's in Education degree from Texas A&I University in Kingsville.
Ramon was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed not only by his family and friends, but by all those fortunate enough to have known him.
Ramon is preceded in death by his parents, Consuelo Champion and Ramon Hinojosa; a brother, Robert Hinojosa; and his uncle, Chano Hinojosa.
Left behind to eternally treasure their memories of Ramon is his son, José Ramó "Ray" Hinojosa III and his wife Alejandra; a daughter, Lanell; 4 grandchildren: Christina, Raymond IV, Nathalia, and Sebastian Hinojosa; 4 sisters: Frances Thompson, Mercedes French, Margaret (John) Rodriguez, and Carmen Hinojosa along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and many, many friends.
Visitation will begin on Wednesday, August 23rd at 12 Noon and continue through 9:00 p.m., with the family starting to greet friends at 5:00 p.m. in the East Chapel at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home. A rosary service is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening. The Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 24th at St. Mary' Catholic Church, 1914 Barnard Rd. All services will conclude after the Mass, and in accordance with Ramon's wishes, cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Ramon's name, may be made to the general scholarship fund at TSC, 80 Fort Brown, Brownsville, TX 78520.
Gerardo Danache, Luis Melendez, Jaime Escobedo, Ruben Herrera, Juan Carlos Torre, and Efrain "Happy" Guerrero are honored to be serving as Ramon's pallbearers.
Senator Eddie A. Lucio Jr.,Sheriff Omar Lucio, Charlie Cabler, Dr. Roberto Rodriguez PhD, Art McDonald Sr., Medardo "Mere" Barbosa, Fire Chief Carlos Elizondo, Mark Johnson, Alexander "Sandy" Stillman, and Hugh Emerson will serve as honorary pallbearers.
