Joe E. Guerra, 68, passed away Sunday, December 13, 2009 in Brownsville, Texas surrounded by his loving family.

Joe was born in McAllen, Texas to two pioneer Valley families, the Guerra family from Starr and Hidalgo Counties and the Champion family from Cameron and Hidalgo Counties. He attended St. Joseph Academy in Brownsville, Texas, from kindergarten until he graduated in 1961. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving his country around the world, and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam. Joe retired from the United States Air Force after serving with distinction for 22 years, having obtained the rank of Technical Sergeant. Upon leaving the United States Air Force, Joe returned home to Brownsville, where he earned his business degree from the University of Texas-Pan American at Brownsville. Joe was an avid hunter and spent many happy hours hunting and traveling extensively. He will be remembered for his generous heart and many philanthropic works.

He was preceded in death by his father, Raul J. Guerra, and by his mother, Beatrice Champion Guerra.

He is survived by his brothers, Raul J., Jr. Gail, Robert L. Norma and by his sisters Sylvia Ray Meckel and Bianca Guerra, nine nieces and nephews and three great nieces and a great nephew. He is also survived by his aunts, Theresa Champion and Bertha Champion Garza.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at the Darling-Mouser Funeral Home with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m..

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary Mother of the Church, 1914 Barnard Rd, Brownsville, Texas on Thursday, December 17, 2009 at 11:00 A.M., with Father Amador Garza officiating. Interment will follow at the Buena Vista Burial Park with military honors conducted by Commander Luis Lucio and members of VFW Post 2035.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to St. Joseph Academy, Brownsville, Texas.

Pallbearers will be Robert L. Guerra, Jr.; Edwin T. Hockaday, IV; Ryan C. Hockaday; Michael J. Guerra; Christopher R. Breeden; Reynaldo G. Garza, III; Mark Haddock and John M. Garza
