LOS FRESNOS, TX. – Jose “Joe” Magdaleno Jimenez, of Los Fresnos, Texas, retired United States Army Veteran, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, the 4th of April 2023 in the comfort of his residence surrounded by his loving family after a hard-fought battle with gallbladder cancer. He was eighty years of age. Jose was born on August 17, 1942 in Tanhuato, Michoacan, Mexico, son of the late Guadalupe Magdaleno Resendez and Ramon Jimenez Cuevas.
Throughout his life, Jose was a resident of Brownsville, San Benito and Los Fresnos, Texas. He graduated from Homer Hanna High School and went on to obtain his associate’s degree from Texas Southmost College. He served in the U.S. Army, Army Reserves, and U.S. National Guard and was a proud veteran having served during the Vietnam War. He was steadfast in his commitment and devotion to the Lord attending Primera Iglesia Presbiteriana Mexicana and was a founding member of Iglesia Presbiteriana San Pablo in Brownsville, serving as an elder and a deacon. He was also a committed member of Iglesia Presbiteriana Gethsemane in San Benito and multiple non-denominational centers of worship in Los Fresnos.
Besides caring deeply for his family, Jose’s talents were many. He was a mechanic, barber, welder, photographer, and a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He was a community man and friend who was always curious to learn, engineer, and could strike a conversation with anyone. Jose was an avid collector and always enjoyed finding unique trinkets and antiques. He enjoyed classical Mexican boleros and American Western classic films. He was a strong man who overcame many hardships, but always found the power to persevere, continue learning, and never stopped sharing his love and compassionate spirit.
Preceding Jose in death was his first wife, Leonarda Zuniga; his parents, Guadalupe Magdaleno Resendez and Ramon Jimenez Cuevas; and his two siblings, Raymundo Resendez and Juana Alvarado.
Survivors include his second wife, Reyna Rodriguez; seven children: sons, Jose Jimenez, Jr., Marcos David Jimenez, Nelson Jonathan Jimenez, Omar Flores, and daughters, Trish “Patty” Butterfield, Marylizette Jimenez, and Tanya Chaparro; ten grandchildren Amanda Jimenez, Breanna Flores, Sophia Jimenez, Matthias “Matt” Butterfield, Aaron Flores, Diana Jimenez, Victoria “Vicky” Jimenez, Diego “Mega” Chaparro, Miguel “Solo” Chaparro, and Remi Vida Flores; and his eight siblings Juan Jimenez, Ramon Jimenez, Gloria Resendez, Eugenia Resendez, Antonia Barrios, Raquel Peña, and Yolanda Resendez.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, the 6th of April 2023 between the hours of twelve noon and eight o'clock at night, with a chapel service, officiated by Pastor Bill Moore of Livingway Family Church, to begin at six o'clock Thursday evening within the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home.
Visiting hours will resume on Friday, the 7th of April 2023 at nine o’clock in the morning, with an additional Spanish chapel service, officiated by Pastor Gamaliel Vallejo, to begin at eleven o’clock in the morning. Interment with military honors will immediately follow, via an escorted procession, at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4464 Old Port Isabel Road, Brownsville.
