Joseph C Newell, Jr. Joe Butch , 56, passed away on August 23, 2009 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville.
Joe attended and graduated from Hanna High School and Pan American University of Edinburgh. He served in the U.S. Navy where he was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. After receiving an honorable discharge, he enlisted in the Naval Reserve. He had been previously employed as a supervisor by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. Joe had great empathy towards the customers he served. He was known and respected for his ability to grasp and interpret complex policy. He conducted many specialized policy trainings for staff. His demeanor was easy going which enabled him to handle situations in a calm manner. His hobbies included telling jokes, listening to the Beatles, playing poker, shooting pool, bowling and barbecuing.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph C. Newell. Left to eternally treasure his memory is his wife, Adelina Newell, a daughter, Stacey Diane Newell, step-sons, Orlando and Rafael Tiffany Benavides, a granddaughter, Annete Benavides, his mother, Gloria Newell, his brothers, Robert Dora from McAllen, and Frank Lisa from Corpus Christi, his sisters, Gloria Jean Mike Samano from League City and Sandy Ronnie Bennett from Brownsville.
Visitation will begin Tuesday, August 25, 2009 from 5 to 7 p.m., with the recitation of the holy rosary to be held at 7p.m., in the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser.
Mass of Resurrection will be held at 10a.m., Wednesday, August 26, at St. Tomas Catholic Church with burial to follow to Buena Vista Burial Park. Military rites will be conducted at the gravesite by the VFW funeral detail under the direction of District Commander Luis Lucio.
Honored to be serving as pallbearers will be Rafael Benavides, Robert Newell, Ronnie Bennett, Erasmo Duran, Eduardo Resendez and Gerardo Olivares.
