Kathi Ann Munter, a forty-five year old teacher at Benavides Elementary School in Brownsville, Texas passed away on August 26, 2008 after a courageous 6 year battle with cancer. Her courage, faith in God, and sense of humor amazed everyone around her. She was and will continue to be an inspiration to many.
Kathi, a native of Minnesota, earned her Bachelors degree in Elementary Education from the University of Minnesota-Duluth. She moved to Brownsville in 1986 when she began a teaching career with the B.I.S.D. that would span twenty-two years at four different elementary schools. While teaching here, Kathi earned her ESL English as a Second Language certification.
During her teaching career, Kathi served as a UIL coordinator for many years. She was nominated and selected as Teacher of the Year for 2007-2008 at A.X. Benavides Elementary as well as the 1998-1999 Teacher of the Year at Reynaldo G. Garza Elementary.
Kathi was a woman of deep faith and a devoted member of the First Baptist Church where she shared the talents that God had blessed her with. She taught Sunday school; was the basketball coach from 1987-1993; served as a church counselor for many years; and was currently serving as vice-chairman of the FBS board. She also played on the co-ed FBC Softball team in the Brownsville Church League.
Her hobbies included reading Scripture and sharing the gospel. She also enjoyed sports and had played softball and basketball in college. Kathi loved her annual movie nights with her beloved nieces and nephews. She loved traveling and road trips.
Kathi was preceded in death by her brother Randy Munter in 2000, and by her Grandma Alice and her Grandma Ailie.
Left behind to eternally treasure her memory are her loving parents, Jack Ruby Munter; her sister Wendy Bruce Bergstedt and their children Josh, Amy, Ben, Molly, and Erik and little Jack Amys son; her brother Ken Diana Munter and their children, Michael, Ciro, and Erika; and her best friend Beth Libby.
Kathis services will be held Thursday, August 28, 2008 at First Baptist Church, 1600 Boca Chica Blvd. Visitation will start at 5:30 p.m. and a service celebrating Kathis life is scheduled for 7 p.m. All local services will conclude at the church and Kathi will be transported to Cloquet, Minnesota for services under the direction of Northland Funeral Home, 218 897-7184. Burial will be in the Apostolic Lutheran Cemetery in Esko, Minnesota.
In lieu of flowers, Kathis family is requesting that memorial gifts in her name be made to the First Baptist Church, 1600 Boca Chica Blvd., Brownsville, TX 78520.
