Kathryn Rivera Hinojosa

RANCHO VIEJO, TX. – Kathryn R. Hinojosa, 76, passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2020 at her home in Rancho Viejo, surrounded by her loving family.

Kathryn was born on July 30, 1943, in Brownsville, Texas, the daughter of late Moises and Katie Lee Rivera. She graduated from Brownsville High School in 1961 and married Abel Hinojosa in 1964.

Kathryn will be most remembered for her kindness. As a teacher at Homer Hanna High School and later, Los Fresnos High School, she cared for her students and encouraged them to do their best. In 1986 she received her Master's Degree in Counseling from Pan American University and became a counselor with the Los Fresnos CISD. As a counselor, she worked hard for her students to help them graduate. She encouraged graduating seniors to apply for scholarships. When scholarships were not available, she reached out to the business community to help find funding for their education. She was a true educator.

Kathryn is preceded in death by her parents, Moises and Katie Lee Rivera; her husband, Abelardo D. “Abel” Hinojosa; and by her godson, Kenny Savino.

Throughout her life, Kathryn was a caring mother and grandmother, and most importantly, a loving and devoted wife to Abel. Left behind to cherish her memory are her daughter, Angela (Rene) Cardenas; her son, Arby (Vera Natasha) Hinojosa; and grandchildren, Kathryn "Katie" Cardenas and Renato E. "Ren" Cardenas. Kathryn is also survived by her brothers and sisters: Lulu Savino, Moe (Cindy) Rivera, Letty (Sonny) Kendrick, Johnny Rivera, Gloria (Kenny) Young, Gooley (Sandi) Rivera, and Rick (Connie) Rivera; her godchildren, Michele Bassett and Moises Pius Rivera III; and by her numerous nieces and nephews.

Honorary pallbearers are Moe Rivera, Johnny Rivera, Gooley Rivera, Rick Rivera, Sonny Kendrick, Kenny Young, Thomas P. Champion, Jr., John G. Champion, and Rolando Olvera, Sr.

The family would like to express the deepest gratitude to Sandra, Jane, Cheli, Rubi, and Vicky for the loving care they provided to Abel and Kathryn.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of floral arrangements and customary remembrances, the Hinojosa Family requests memorial contributions be made to the Walk to End Alzheimer’s at the following link: https://www.facebook.com/donate/661789497727738 or https://www.act.alz.org and make a donation on behalf of our walk in the name of Angela Cardenas.
