SAN ANTONIO - Lionel Garza, Jr., 71, returned to his heavenly home on Monday June 20, 2016 after a lifelong battle with a pituitary tumor. His devotion to his family and firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace.
Lionel was born in Kingsville, Texas in 1944 to Lionel and Cayetana "Lois/Elodia" (later Fletcher) Garza. Lionel was raised by his grandparents, Lorenzo and Brigida, in Corpus Christi, Texas, alongside his uncles, whom he viewed as older brothers. He was married in 1968 to his college sweetheart, Delia, in Brownsville, Texas.
The first in his family to go to college, he graduated from Texas A&I in Kingsville with a degree in electrical engineering. He served in the United States Air Force during Vietnam, stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi during hurricane Camille, and later at Bergstrom AFB in Austin, Texas. He later worked for over 30 years at Kelly AFB in San Antonio, Texas.
Lionel was ordained a Catholic deacon in 1983, and actively served for over 20 years at St. Dominic's Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas.
Lionel is survived by his wife of 47 years, Delia; his daughter Mariana Ross, his son-in-law Michael; two granddaughters: Sydney and Ashley, and numerous extended family members.
Lionel will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and dedicated servant of God.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 26, 2016 from to 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the East Chapel at Darling-Mouser Funeral with the recitation of the holy rosary at 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening.
Funeral Mass will be held on at 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 27, 2016 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1200 Lincoln St., with committal services following at Buena Vista Burial Park. The VFW Post 2035 Funeral Honor Guard will render Military honors at the graveside.
