Lloyd E. Horn, a longtime Brownsville resident, peacefully completed his earthly journey on Saturday, May 23, 2009. Lloyd was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Louise Marie Stevenson Horn and his daughter and son-in-law, Gloria W. and Wilfred L. Rattigan. He is survived by two sisters, Alice Jean Cavender Dallas and Jan McCartney Houston; his daughters, Judy K. and An Louise Horn; his sons, Richard his wife Annette

Horn, Barry T., James M., and Joseph L. his wife Moy Horn; his grandchildren, Ronald J. Rattigan, Kathy R. Mike Guerra, Sean Rattigan, Kelly Kyle Anderson, Amanda David Gatton, Jacquelyn Jason Grohman, Robert Christine J. Horn, John Jodie Guthrie, and Stephanie, Travis, Brooke Horn; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Lloyd came from a large family in Ellis County, south of Dallas with two older brothers and three more brothers and five sisters. He attended Dallas schools and left home in 1935 and joined the Navy and served on the USS ARIZONA during his first enlistment. When discharged from the Navy in 1939, he worked in the Houston with the Federal Land Bank. With the passage of the universal draft, he went back into the Navy as an officer. He married Louise M. Stevenson Peewee, the step-daughter of his brother Leo, in November of 1941. Lloyd served at the Naval Training Station at Corpus Christi, and was discharged in January 1946.

Lloyd served as a civil service employee in the same job he had as an enlisted man. He had worked as a court reporter for the Navy Court Martials and in November of 1948, he was hired as a court reporter for the 107th District Court in Brownsville and later, federal official court reporter for the Southern District of Texas, Brownsville Division.

Lloyd retired from court reporting in 1979, and became busier than ever. He began building childrens furniture and other wood products which he would sell at craft shows. He also gradually started raising palm trees. In 2006, he made a charitable gift of 1,200 palms to The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m., Tuesday, May 26, 2009 in the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home and continue through 9 p.m. this evening with the recitation of the holy rosary at 7:30 p.m. this evening at Darling-Mouser. The Mass of Christian Resurrection will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 602 E. Elizabeth St. in Brownsville. Committal services will follow to Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be conducted at the graveside under the direction of Commander Raul Leal and the American Legion Post 43 funeral honor guard.

In lieu of flowers, a charitable gift in Lloyds name may be made to the Immaculate Conception Cathedral Sesquicentennial Restoration Fund, 1218 East Jefferson St., Brownsville, Texas 78520.
