Lorene Holmes Robinson De Perez

Lorene Holmes Robinson de Perez, 96, of Matamoros, Mexico and Rancho Viejo, Texas passed away peacefully and entered into eternal life with Our Lord at her home in Matamoros surrounded by her family on Saturday, October 10, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eduardo Perez Garcia. They had a beautiful marriage and celebrated 66 years of love and devotion.

Lorene was born in Idalia, Missouri on January 4, 1913, the only child born to Leila Holmes and Louis C. Robinson. She frequently described the town as a train stop and a small farming community where they cared for and tended to horses. Her mother and father were both from Iola, Kansas. Lorenes dad, Louis Robinson, was a banker in Iola, Kansas and passed away at a young age from the flu epidemic of 1918 when Lorene was only five years old.

Lorenes grandparents on her mothers side were Sam and Mimi short for grandma Holmes. Sam and Mimi moved to Oklahoma and worked at a smelter. After Lorenes dad passed away, she lived on and off with her grandparents along with her mother Leila and her Aunt Gertrude.

Lorenes father, Louis Robinson, had one brother and a sister named Marian. Soon after she lost her father, Lorene started letter writing and corresponded with her Aunt Marian for many years. When Lorene wrote a letter, she would keep writing back as long as the recipient would reciprocate with a letter. She would mark envelopes with the date received and the date she responded. She preferred letter writing to calling long distance. Lorene continued her letter writing and especially loved corresponding with her grand nieces and nephews. She loved to send college money along with a nice letter of encouragement.

Her Aunt Gertrude married Lute Stover and had two children, Shirley and Buck name derived from the Army, buck privates. Lute Stover was responsible for bringing Lorene to Brownsville. Lute was offered a job in Port Isabel for a company he was working for in Kansas City. He brought his wife, his children, Shirley and Buck, and Lorene down to South Texas. They arrived at a train station in San Benito, Texas. Lute and Gertrude moved to Port Isabel overseeing construction of the first causeway to South Padre Island. Lorene lived near Bayview and described her first home, as an unfinished home on top of a hill overlooking Laguna Madre. Lute Stover built small homes in Bayview as a second business with the help of two assistants from Iola. It was during this time of Lorenes life she learned how to play cards and dance--two things she would come to master as the years went on.

Lorenes mom was living in Wichita Falls where she attempted to open a beauty shop but later joined Lorene in Bayview to try her hand in another trade. She found work with a Chicago-based company that sold small parcels of land and citrus trees.

Lorene attended junior high in Iola, Kansas and excelled in writing, music, math, government, and Latin. Then Lorene moved to Bayview, Texas when she was in the 8th grade and attended high school in Brownsville where teachers immediately recognized her astuteness and dedication to her studies.

Lorene met Eduardo Perez Garcia Lalo while tutoring in high school, and the two were married on September 15, 1934. In her first job, she handled the school tax roll and also worked with local judges researching public filings. Lorene later became a bookkeeper for a company in Bayview and worked with them from 1931 to 1951. She started at 36 a month and worked her way up to 400 a month by the time she left. She took much pride in her acquired accounting skills which she later applied to help build her husbands agricultural business in Matamoros.
PLorene and Lalo built their first home in Matamoros in 1950. In 1956, Lalo was promoted and they moved to Mexico City. Lorenes mother lived with Lorene and Lalo in Mexico City and Matamoros. While living in Matamoros, Lorenes mom passed away on August 13, 1964. Lorene and Lalo moved
