Manfred L. del Castillo, 93, of Brownsville, entered into eternal rest on Friday, July 9, 2021, at Sunshine Haven in Olmito, Texas.
Manfred was born in 1927 in Brownsville, Texas. Upon graduation from high school in 1945, he enlisted in the United States Air Force in January 1946 to December 1948. During this time, he earned a WWII victory medal. Once discharged from the Air Force, he attended Texas Southmost College. He was recalled in June 1950 to June 1953 for the reserves. Upon completing his Air Force service, Manfred transferred to Texas A & I University and graduated with a master’s degree in education in 1955.
He was a teacher at Canales Elementary School from 1953-1957, Assistant Principal and Coach at Putegnat Elementary from 1957-1962, a Principal at Resaca Elementary from 1963-1974, and, then a Principal at Rosa E. Del Castillo from 1974 to 1989. He worked for the BISD for 36 years and retired in 1989.
He married Miss Lucia Martinez of Encinal, Texas in 1955. They had seven children: Alan, Cynthia, Manfred L. Jr., (Deceased), Rose, Ric hard, Sylvia and Mark del Castillo.
He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, American Legion, and Elks Lodge. He loved to play pool, the piano, and the guitar. He also loved to DANCE!
Manfred was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Lucia del Castillo, his son, Dr. Manfred L. del Castillo Jr., and his granddaughter, Krystle Marie del Castillo; his parents Oscar J. del Castillo and Cleotilde Paredes Ceballos, his brothers: Oscar (Olive) del Castillo, Jose A. (Lois+) del Castillo and a sister, Esperanza (Guadalupe+) Padron and an aunt, Rosita del Castillo.
Survivors include his children: Alan (Shirley del Castillo), Cynthia (Saul) Santos, daughter-in-law, Susana del Castillo (Dr. Manfred L. del Castillo Jr.+), Rose (Rodney) Meyer, Richard (Faith) del Castillo, Dr. Sylvia del Castillo (David) Beaupre, and Mark (Candice) del Castillo. His loving grandchildren: Yvonne del Castillo, Austin del Castillo, Brandon Gallardo, Jason Gallardo, Oscar del Castillo, Marco del Castillo, Ryan Meyer, Ashlynne Meyer, Connor Walter, Allison Walter, Nicholas Beaupre, Jacqueline Beaupre, Samantha Beaupre, Dorian del Castillo, and Julian del Castillo. His great-grandchildren are Evan Bateman, Savannah Slovak, Danica Garza, Rylee Meyer, and Kyler Meyer. He is also survived by his siblings: Lidia (Armando) Castañeda and Wayne Ceballos.
Visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, and continue through 9:00 p.m. with the recitation of the rosary scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. Monday evening at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1914 Barnard Road. Visitation will resume at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 21, 2021, in the East Chapel at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home. The Funeral Mass is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 21, 2021, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 2255 Southmost Road. Committal services will follow at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be conducted at the graveside under the direction of the American Vietnam Veterans Chapter 1, Brownsville, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Saul Santos, Rod Meyer, David Beaupre, Austin del Castillo, Jason Gallardo, and Oscar del Castillo.
