HOUSTON, TX. – On Sunday, January 17, 2021, Manuela Cavazos Escamilla passed away in Cypress, Texas, at the age of 92. Manuela, affectionately known as Mela, was born on December 28, 1928 in San Pedro, Texas to Benito and Refugia Cavazos. She received her teaching degree from East Texas University in 1951. In June of 1955, she married Jose Escamilla. She was a dedicated teacher at both Villa Nueva School and La Encantada School for 25 years. She also assisted her husband in his ranching and farming business.
She was a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews, making birthdays extra special and indulging them theater movies and shaved snow cones weekly. She also made an impression as she taught them responsibility in providing allowances for chores. She enriched the lives of her family and her generosity will never be forgotten. Her nieces have modeled her generosity in the way they serve others- the way “Tia Mela” did.
Mela was preceded in death by her father, Benito, her mother, Refugia, her husband, Jose, and brothers, Sabas and Benito.
She is survived by her sisters, Guadalupe (Lupita) Cavazos and Josefa (Fita) Montemayor, and by her several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 25, 2021 at Escamilla Cemetery in El Naranjo, Texas.
Please make donations to the Red Cross in her memory in lieu of flowers.
