Margaret H. Lhost

Margaret ("Peg") Lhost (age 99) died on Wednesday, April 24, 2019, at Solara Hospital, Brownsville, Texas. She died peacefully, of age-related illness, with family present. She was born April 6, 1920, in Northfield, Minnesota, to John Wesley Hornbeck and Frances Wolfe Hornbeck. She was the youngest of three children. She was preceded in death by her parents, step-father Gerald Allen, brother John Hornbeck, sister Helen Hornbeck Tanner, husband Harvey Lhost, and granddaughter Amanda Lhost. She is survived by her three children, Linda (Rudy) Lhost-Catal, John (Cynthia) Lhost, and Thomas (Kathleen) Lhost; four grandchildren, Jonathan (Kari) Lhost, Elizabeth Lhost, Adrienne Lhost, Jennifer Lhost, and one great-grandchild, Benjamin Lhost.

Peg grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where her parents were on the faculty of Kalamazoo College. She graduated from Carroll College, Waukesha, Wisconsin, in 1941, with a bachelor's degree in history. She married Harvey ("Harv") Lhost, of De Pere, Wisconsin, in 1941 in Benzonia, Michigan, where her family spent summers on nearby Crystal Lake in Beulah, Michigan. Peg and Harv raised their children in Appleton, Wisconsin, where he worked for Lederle Laboratories Division of American Cyanamid and she was active in community organizations. They were long time members of Butte des Morts Golf Club where they had many great friends. They retired to Bayview, Texas, in the early 1980's and in June of 1989 moved to Valley International Country Club, in Brownsville, where Harv was an avid golfer. The last few years Peg lived with her daughter and husband in Dexter, Michigan, while still wintering at her home in Texas.

Peg was a member and officer in several organizations, including American Association of University Women, PEO Sisterhood, Friends of the Appleton Library, and the Embroiderer's Guild of America. She was an accomplished knitter and needle-pointer and created beautiful sweaters, pillows, and art that her family will enjoy for years to come. Peg and Harv were devoted Green Bay Packer fans, season ticket holders for over 30 years, and attended the famous "Ice Bowl" December 31, 1967. Peg maintained a love of all sports throughout her life.

The children thank the nurses, doctors, and staff at Valley Baptist Hospital, Spanish Meadows Rehabilitation, Valley Regional Hospital, and Solara Hospital of Brownsville, Texas, for their care and attention to their mother's health and comfort throughout her time in their facilities. Special appreciation is extended to their mother's personal care givers from Comfort Keepers in Michigan and Valleywide Home Care in Texas. Thank you to Darling-Mouser Funeral Home for their sensitivity and support in making final arrangements for their mother.
