Margarita "Maggie" De Luna Hinojosa

Margarita Maggie De Luna Hinojosa went peacefully to be with the Lord on September 30, 2007. Born in Brownsville, Texas on June 12, 1917 to Sancho and Francisca de Luna, Mrs. Hinojosa graduated from Brownsville High School-Junior College.

A resident of Brownsville all her life, she dedicated 38 years of service at Texas Southmost College serving men and women returning from military assignment and desiring to earn a college education. During that time she eventually directed an office where veterans of World War II, the Korean conflict, and the Vietnam War found personnel with care and compassion to assist them in reaching their educational goals. Over the years thousands of military veterans and their families, primarily from local communities, were beneficaries of services through Mrs. Hinojosa and her staff. Even though Mrs. Hinojosa retired from Texas Southmost College in 1984, her interest, support and concern for military veterans endured. She and her husband consistently attended local Veteran's and Memorial Day events. On June 14, 2002, Mrs. Hinojosa was recognized by UTBTSC as a recipient of the Diamonds Among Us award. She saw the Diamond award not only as a recognition of her work, but also as a salute to every military veteran.

She is preceded in death by her parents Sancho and Francisca Segovia de Luna, as well as her brothers; Fernando killed in action during World War II, Roberto and Jose de Luna. Also predeceasing Mrs. Hinojosa were her sisters; Bertha Johnston, Irma Pattee.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years Mr. Eutimio Timo Hinojosa of Brownsville; her sister Mrs. Ana Maria de Luna Alvarez and her brother Mr. Luis de Luna both of Brownsville. Also surviving Mrs. Hinojosa are numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hinojosa wishes to express his heartfelt thanks to Dr. Juan Martinez and his staff as well as to the staff of Mother of Perpetual Help Nursing Home for their care and compassion toward his beloved wife during her illness. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her honor may be made to the Margarita de Luna Hinojosa Veterans Memorial Scholarship at the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College, 80 Fort Brown, Brownsville, TX 78520 Attn: Development Office.
