Maria Magdalena "Nena" Becerra

McALLEN, TX. – Maria Magdalena “Nena” Becerra entered into enteral rest on Thursday, the 21st of September 2023 in the comfort of her McAllen residence surrounded by her loving family. She was ninety-four years of age.

Nena was born in Brownsville, Texas on July 22, 1929, daughter of the late Guadalupe Suarez and Maria del Jesus De los Santos Suarez, whom she cared for in their later years. She was a loving and devoted mother to her five children, and a loving grandmother and great-grandmother. A devout Catholic, Nena was a parishioner of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, where she married her husband Fernando Becerra, Sr. in 1948. Their children later attended Immaculate School, which was situated across the street from the cathedral. She loved the community of San Pedro and was also a parishioner of San Pedro Catholic Church. After completing courses at Mercy Hospital in Brownsville, Nena earned her certification as a certified nursing assistant. Some of her favorite pastimes included traveling and volunteering in various church functions and community events.

Preceding Nena in death was her husband, Fernando Becerra, Sr.; her sons Fernando Becerra, Jr., Oscar Becerra, and Eloy Becerra; her parents, Guadalupe and Maria Suarez; and her brother, Alberto Suarez (Judy +).

Survivors include her children, Oberlin “Lin” Becerra (Elsa) of Kingsville, Texas and Edna Becerra of McAllen, Texas; her grandchildren John Joe Becerra (Beth), Sandra Ann Becerra, Eloy Becerra, and Marcus Lin Becerra (Megan); seven great-grandchildren; her five siblings Abel Suarez (Celia), Lydia Lucia Longoria (Abel), Calixto Suarez (Minerva), Israel Suarez (Mari), and Antonio Armando Suarez (Sylvia); in addition to extended family members.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, the 25th of September 2023 between the hours of ten o’clock in the morning and one o’clock in the afternoon, with the recitation of the holy rosary to begin at twelve noon within the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at two o’clock in the afternoon on Monday, the 25th of September 2023 at the historic Immaculate Conception Cathedral, 1218 E. Jefferson Street, Brownsville. All services will conclude at the church.

The family will gather for a private committal service at El Carmen Cemetery in Brownsville, where Nena will be laid to rest beside her husband and son.

Honored to serve as her pallbearers will be Sonny Suarez, Jason Suarez, Valerio Longoria, Romeo Longoria, Cesar Suarez, and Tony Suarez. Calixto Suarez, Jr. will serve as honorary pallbearer.
