Maria Calderoni Hernandez peacefully passed away at the age of 98 on Sunday, October 25, 2009 at Spanish Meadows Nursing Home. She was a life long resident of Brownsville, Texas and a descendant of a pioneer family since 1913.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Enrique Hernandez and her loving parents, Jose L. Calderoni and Refugio Yturria Calderoni; her brothers: Jose B. Calderoni, Dr. F.F. Calderoni, Dr. C. F. Calderoni, and her son, Joe H. Calderoni.
Maria attended Incarnate Word Academy and graduated from Villa Maria High School. She widowed at a very early age and never remarried, dedicating herself to her children and her widowed father, owner of the Calderoni City Drug Store.
She was a devout Catholic and was a faithful parishioner of both Sacred Heart, where she was a member of the Choir and Altar Society, and St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was active in Catholic activities throughout her life.
She is survived by her sister, Judith C. Champion; her daughter, Lourdes Hernandez Avila; her sons and daughters-in-law: Dr. Henry and Delfina Calderoni of El Paso, TX; Ben and Merry Calderoni of San Miguel Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico; Carlos and Katherine Hernandez of Austin, TX; and her daughter-in-law, Carol Calderoni of Houston, TX; 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her nephew, Frank Calderoni; her nieces, Doris Ann Calderoni McLaughlin of Houston, TX, and Jeanine Calderoni Ransome and Claudia Calderoni Champion both of Brownsville.
Visitation will begin at 6 p .m. Tuesday, October 27, 2009 with the recitation of the holy rosary at 7 p.m. in the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home. The Mass of Christian Resurrection will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 602 E. Elizabeth Street. Interment will follow to Buena Vista Burial Park.
