Mrs. Maria del Refugio Martinez, 89, beloved mother grandmother, and sister entered into the glory of her eternal life on Sunday, January 6, 2008 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen surrounded by her loving family.
Mrs. Martinez, a Rio Grande Valley native, was born on June 6, 1918 to Pablo and Concepcion Garza who preceded her in death. Cookie or Cuca as she was affectionately known by all was a woman who was devoted to her family. She had a unique sense of humor and her travesuras will be deeply missed by all those fortunate to have known her and been a part of her life.
In addition to her parents, Cookie was preceded in death by her husband, Butch Martinez; two sisters, Guadalupe G. Castillo and Josefa Solis; and two brothers, Sabas and Alfonso Garza.
Left behind to eternally treasure her memory is her beloved daughter Connie and her husband Ruben Valdez and their children Dustin, David and Ashley; her sisters, Cecilia G. Anzaldua and Santos G. De La Rosa; two brothers, Jose S. Fina Garza and Paul Eva Garza and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 in the East Chapel of Darling-Mouser Funeral Home with the recitation of the holy rosary at 7 p.m. this evening. The Mass of Resurrection will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 555 W. St. Francis Street in Brownsville. Interment will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park. Family members are honored to be serving as Cookies pallbearers.
