Maria R. Fernandez, 92, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister passed away on February 15, 2012 at Valley Baptist Medical Center Brownsville surrounded by her loving family.
She was born May 6, 1919 to Daniel and Rosa Pequeo Ramirez in Brownsville, Texas where she lived all her life raising her children.
Maria will always be remembered for her love and devotion to her children. She opened her home to family and friends always providing wonderful meals,good conversation, and friendly competitive games of Chalupa Loteria and Bingo.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ramon G. Fernandez her daughters, Manuela and Maria Gloria her parents, Daniel and Rosa Pequeo Ramirez a brother, Alberto Cecilia Ramirez her twin sister, Maria Guadalupe Domingo Garcia and a sister Rosa P. Jesus Ramos.
She is survived by her children, Mary Rose Ervin Hickman of Sumter, South Carolina Manuela G Gracia Grimmett of Alexandria, Virginia Leticia of Brownsville, Texas Alicia Richard Bautista of Houston, Texas Ramon Marta of Austin, Texas Ana Cristina Frank Cisneros of Houston Texas and Norma Patricia Ricky of Brownsville Texas. a sister, Anita Ezequiel Silva of Brownsville, Texas a brother, Armando Ramirez of San Antonio, Texas eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Maria was a member of the local chapter of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and up until her illness, was a volunteer for the Amigos del Valle program
where she was honored with the Volunteer of the Year award numerous times.
Viewing will be from Noon to 9 p.m. on Friday February 17th. The family will start receiving visitors at 4 p.m. at DarlingMouser Funeral Home with the recitation of the holy rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church followed by burial at Buena Vista Burial Park.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are: Christopher Fernandez, Frank Cisneros, Ricky Vasquez, Richard Bautista, Hector Silva, and Daniel Silva.
Honorary pallbearers are: Ezequiel Silva, Zeke Silva, Jr. Ervin Hickman, Jr. and her grandchildren, Jamie Singleton Stanley Courtney Singleton Joseph Gracia Garfield Grimmett Geoffrey Grimmett Lauren Michelle Bautista and Richard Bautista III.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts in Marias name be made to Amigos del Valle Incorporated, 2575 Russell Drive Brownsville, Texas, 78520.
The family wishes to thank their mothers long time caregiver Elvia Luna Father Armand Mathew Dr. Juan Martinez, Dr. Roberto Robles, Dr. Lorenzo Pelly Dr. Karen Brooks Dr. Ricardo M. Schwarcz the nursing staff of the 3rd floor and the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Valley Baptist Medical Center Brownsville and the staff of Brownsville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
