Maria Ofelia G. Garza, 84, beloved mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend entered into the glory of her eternal life peacefully on Sunday, August 29, 2021, at her son's residence.
Ofelia was a native and lifetime resident of Brownsville. Ofelia worked at Immigration & Naturalization Service for over 30 years. After her retirement, Ofelia enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Ofelia belonged to a BUNCO group that met monthly for 40 years. She also enjoyed playing Loteria and would gather with family to play weekly.
A devout Catholic, Ofelia was a devoted parishioner at St. Luke’s Catholic Church. Ofelia had a deep devotion to our Blessed Mother and praying the rosary, something she did at least once a day and sometimes twice a day. This devotion led her to become a member of the Altar and Rosary Society at St. Luke’s. As a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, Ofelia would go to recite the rosary for those who had passed away.
Ofelia was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed not only by her family and friends but by all those fortunate to have known her.
Ofelia was preceded in death by her husband, David Garza; her daughter and son-in-law, Delia Noemi “Mimi” and Larry Weston; her parents, Josefina and Servando Gonzalez; 2 sisters, Yolanda (Raul+) Trevino and Hinelda “Nellie” G. De Leon; and 2 brothers: Servando Gonzalez Jr. and Gilberto “Gil” Gonzalez Sr.

(Jesus+) Rodriguez and Josefina “Chepa” G. Loya; 2 sisters-in-law, Celia Gonzalez and Beatriz “Bea” Rodriguez; and 5 brothers-in-law, Jose Angel De Leon, Jose Alfredo (Mela), Roberto (Maureen), Richard (Linda) and Danny (Diana) Garza.
Ofelia will also be missed by the grandchildren that were the apple of her eye: Natasha M. Weston, Lia R. Garza, Brittany Nicole (Jordan) La Croix, Lucas (Amber) Garza, and Christopher Michael Haas Jr.; and 5 great-grandchildren: Teagan Allen, Kinsley Rae, and Trae Michael Pravecek, Adalynn Grace and Aubree Eloise Garza plus Andrew Luke Garza who is on the way along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Visitation will be on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2021, in the East Chapel at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home from 3 pm to 9 pm with the recitation of the holy rosary scheduled for 7:00 p.m. that evening. The Funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 am on Friday, Sept. 3, 2021, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, 2800 Rockwell Ave. All services will conclude after the Mass and in accordance with her wishes, cremation will follow.
Lucas Andrew Garza, Christopher Michael Haas Jr., David De Leon, Sigifredo “Sigi” Loya, Richard Garza, Raul Martinez, Lucio Cruz Jr., and Ruben S. Garcia Jr. are honored to be serving as Ofelia’s pallbearers.
Ofelia’s great-grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.
