Maria Guadalupe Tamayo

Maria Guadalupe "Lupana" Tamayo passed away peacefully on January 25, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. Lupana was born in Monterrey, Mexico in 1930. Lupana met Jose Angel Tamayo in Monterry, MX and were married in 1955. They took up residence in Brownsville, and began raising a family, eventually having 4 children. Lupana found her life's commitment and true career vocation serving catholic education and its students. She worked at St. Mary's Catholic School for several years, and then served the Saint Joseph Academy community over the next 45 years as executive secretary and eventually the school's registrar. In 2005, she received the Saint Joseph Academy Spirit Award for her services and loyalty to the school. In 2007, Lupana along with her husband Joe were awarded the USA Province Affiliation. The award is the highest honor given by the Marist Brothers of the Schools to its non-vowed community members.
Lupana was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She found great joy in her children's sports and musical activities. In later years, she most loved spending time with and entertaining her many grandchildren. Her role as a loving mother and grandmother reached beyond her immediate family and extended to the thousands of students who passed through the halls of St. Joseph Academy. Lupana had a strong faith in God and selfless commitment to helping others. She enjoyed music, reading mystery and romance novels, and solving crossword puzzles. Lupana loved, and was loved by all. She will be greatly missed, but will always live on in our hearts.
Lupana was preceded in death by her father, Rafael Gonzalez, and her mother, Antonia Santos de Gonzalez. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Jose Angel Tamayo; her sister Blanca (Humberto†) Pena; her children: Joseph (Julia) Tamayo, Ricardo (Jeanette) Tamayo, Carlo (Dora Yvette) Tamayo, and Monica (Reichard) Kahle of Charleston, SC; her grandchildren: Jacqueline, Jacob, Joey, Anthony, Carlo Jr., Nicholas, Sara, Diego and Rodrigo Tamayo; Katherine and Leslie Kahle; Francis and Fernanda Rodriguez; Violeta (Orlando) Rodriguez and Miguel (Beatrice) Gutierrez.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 27th, from 5 to 8 P.M. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with a Rosary at 7 P.M. A funeral mass will be held Saturday, January 28th at 10 A.M. at St. Mary's, followed by burial at Buena Vista Cemetery. A reception will be held immediately after the burial at the St. Joseph Academy middle school division gym.
Pallbearers will be Joseph, Ricardo, Carlo, Jacob, Joey, Carlo Jr., Nicholas Tamayo, Reichard Kahle, and Miguel Gutierrez. Honorary pallbearers will be Anthony, Diego and Rodrigo Tamayo.
